Job description

Responsibilities

• Work from verbal or written descriptions, drawings, or sketches to design, plan, layout, and complete a variety of general trades projects.
• Monitor and inspect work in progress and upon completion to ensure compliance with relevant guidelines, codes, and regulations.
• Use general shop and trades equipment, machinery, and tools safely and effectively.
• Assist with determining facility and grounds maintenance needs, making recommendations for repair, correction, or resolution.
• Draw detailed sketches or prepare scaled plans based on verbal or written instructions to accomplish a project.
• Review in‑house work requests and visit job sites to determine required materials.
• Conduct inspections of the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair.
• Provide the supervisor with recommendations for the type, quantity, and quality of materials needed to accomplish a project.
• Supply verbal instruction and demonstrate proper trade techniques and the proper use of tools and equipment.
• Prepare Purchase Order and requisition documentation as required.
• Assemble materials, tools, and equipment needed for tasks.
• Track inventory and control the distribution and maintenance of tools and equipment.
• Perform supervisory duties at assigned facilities and fill in for supervisors during absences.
• Assist in the preparation of and provide input for written performance evaluations of subordinate employees.
• Perform routine semi‑skilled maintenance and repair in other trades as trained and required (e.g., plumbing, electrical, carpentry, masonry).
• Work independently with minimal supervision or in a project/team setting according to supervisory guidance.
• Assist with repairs and upkeep of facility structures and building systems from foundation to roof, both interior and exterior.
• Perform general grounds maintenance tasks such as clearing sites, mowing lawns, maintaining roads and sidewalks, snow and ice removal, and collection of trash.
• Assist with Non‑military Use Program (NMU) requirements when applicable.
• Work overtime as required, especially during winter months.
• Perform other job duties as assigned or provide assistance at other DMNA facilities to meet operational needs.

Job Requirements

• Proficiency in operating a motor vehicle, other motorized equipment, and a variety of construction equipment.
• Ability to perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment and facility structures.
• Basic arithmetic skills for estimating project details and calculating material and labor quantities.
• Strong interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate with co‑workers, managers, Federal and State personnel, and the public.
• Adherence to directions, ensuring follow‑through and completion of assignments; ability to seek assistance or report concerns.
• Comfortable working at heights (e.g., climbing ladders, scaffolds, lifts). Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry heavy objects and equipment (50+ lbs).

Minimum Qualifications

• Four years of full‑time experience in a skilled journey‑level trade or equivalent apprenticeship training (year‑for‑year substitution available).
• At least 18 years of age, with a high school diploma or GED.
• Must read and write in English.
• Valid driver’s license to operate a motor vehicle within New York State; must report changes to supervisory chain and State Human Resources (MNHS).
• May be required to acquire and maintain a military driver’s license for military vehicle operation as per NGB standards.
• Experience with heights, heavy lifting (50+ lbs), confined spaces, and working outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Ability to operate and maintain tools, machinery, and equipment required for assigned craft.
• Competency in commonly used software (Microsoft Word, Excel).
• Successful completion of training for assigned data systems (SFS, GFEBS, SLMS) and other relevant computer training.
• Obtain and maintain a favorable background investigation with appropriate clearance (National Agency Check with Inquiry; SECRET clearance possible).

Additional Comments

Current Start Rate: $50,425. Job Rate: $61,548.
Peekskill Armory receives an additional Downstate Adjustment of $4,000 annually.

This position is not in the Classified Service of New York State; covered under New York State Military Law. Current Civil Service employees will lose seniority within the Classified Service if selected.
