Job description

General Manager, North Asia

Reuters seeks an experienced newsroom leader with the skills and experience to run editorial operations and manage challenging situations to become our General Manager, North Asia.

The General Manager, North Asia will work with editors and newsroom managers to support our bureaus in Greater China, Korea, and Japan. The role involves producing outstanding journalism, exceeding client expectations, adapting to new technologies, and ensuring the safety and well-being of journalists.

Based in Beijing, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with on-ground teams and the editorial safety team to navigate a complex reporting landscape—securing world-class reporting while safeguarding our teams.

A strong communicator with diplomatic skills, the General Manager will manage relations with Chinese authorities and external stakeholders, including the country teams of LSEG, our largest client.

The candidate will partner with regional and global newsroom leaders to proactively transform and adapt to new tools like generative AI, ensuring the bureaus remain at the forefront of journalistic innovation and competitiveness.

This is a vital and challenging role at the core of some of Reuters' most important news bureaus, offering significant professional growth opportunities in an exciting location.

About the Role

The General Manager, North Asia will:

  • Oversee operational aspects of bureaus in Greater China, Korea, and Japan
  • Collaborate with editors to translate coverage and business priorities into hiring and team structure decisions
  • Partner with HR, safety, legal, finance, and real estate teams on regional issues
  • Lead editorial safety initiatives, especially in mainland China
  • Drive innovation in workflows and technology to enhance reporting capabilities
About You

You are a good fit if you:

  • Have proven experience managing editorial teams or overseeing editorial operations
  • Can manage complex stakeholder relationships, including senior leaders and external partners
  • Have a track record of implementing change and delivering difficult messages
  • Have managed reporting in challenging situations
  • Are adept at integrating new technologies into newsrooms
  • Are committed to equity and fairness in staff dealings
  • Possess Mandarin Chinese or Japanese language skills (a plus)
