Confidential - a well-established scrap metal recycler in Detroit seeks a General Manager to own and lead its Detroit Metro yard, driving safety, performance, and growth across ferrous and non-ferrous materials. This high-volume site requires hands-on leadership and strategic P&L ownership.

The role oversees ~20 staff, including supervisors, office personnel, and maintenance, with a base salary of $125k–$150k plus bonus and benefits.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of management experience in a scrap metal recycling yard.
• Strong knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous grades (copper, brass, aluminum, etc.).
• Experience leading supervisors and hands-on yard teams.
• Strong organizational and leadership skills.

Responsabilités

• Lead and develop a team of about 20 including ferrous and non-ferrous supervisors, office staff and maintenance.
• Own the yard's P&L, volumes and margins; work with buyers/traders on pricing and supplier relationships.
• Oversee receiving, grading, sorting, processing and shipping of ferrous and non-ferrous material.
• Lead safety culture and ensure environmental/regulatory compliance at the site.

About the role

Our client, an established and growing metal recycling business, is looking for a General Manager to lead its Detroit Metro yard. This is a high-volume site processing both ferrous and non-ferrous material. The General Manager has full ownership of the yard, including the P&L, and will drive safety, performance and growth.

Key responsibilities

Leadership and people

• Lead and develop a team of about 20, including ferrous and non-ferrous supervisors, office staff and maintenance
• Set clear expectations, hold the team accountable and build a strong, organized culture
• Own recruitment, training and performance across the site

Commercial and P&L

• Take full responsibility for the yard’s P&L, volumes and margins
• Work closely with buyers and traders on pricing, margins and supplier relationships
• Build and grow relationships with industrial accounts, peddlers and customers

Operations

• Oversee receiving, grading, sorting, processing and shipping of ferrous and non-ferrous material
• Keep inventory and grading accurate
• Plan production to hit volume and quality targets
• Manage equipment uptime, including balers, shears and material handlers, with the maintenance team

Safety and compliance

• Lead a strong, visible safety culture
• Make sure the site meets environmental, regulatory and company standards

What we’re looking for

• 5+ years of management experience in a scrap metal recycling yard
