Position: General Maintenance Worker - Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Area/McAllen/Brownsville/Harlingen/Corpus Christi, Texas

Position Summary: This position performs general maintenance of buildings and equipment requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in trades such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, masonry, electrical work, and key card locks. The work involves traveling to remote sites within the Rio Grande Valley and completing tasks independently. Occasionally, the worker will respond to after-hours emergency calls to mitigate issues and prevent damage to equipment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Replaces electrical receptacles, wires, switches, fixtures, and motors.
  2. Replaces filters, belts, etc.
  3. Uses plaster or compound to patch minor holes and cracks in walls and ceilings.
  4. Repairs or replaces sinks, water coolers, and toilets.
  5. Performs painting of structures and equipment.
  6. Repairs or replaces concrete floors, steps, and sidewalks.
  7. Replaces damaged paneling and floor tiles.
  8. Hangs doors and installs door locks; assists with lockouts, battery changes, and rekeying cards.
  9. Replaces broken windowpanes.
  10. Performs general maintenance on equipment and machinery.
  11. Maintains flexible scheduling, including on-call rotations, occasional overtime, and some weekend work.
  12. Performs other duties as required or requested.
Education and Experience:

Minimum requirements include a High School Diploma or GED, plus at least three (3) years of general mechanical, electrical, carpentry, or maintenance experience within the past 4 years. Completion of technical/vocational training or military/industry experience may substitute. A valid Texas Driver's License and ability to maintain DHS Facility access are required. Experience with preventative maintenance and completing work orders is also necessary.

  • Knowledge of drywall, wood framing, concrete, and building materials.
  • Understanding of safety procedures.
  • Skill in operation of hand and power tools.

  • Strong public and interpersonal relations skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
Communication Skills:

Must respond effectively to inquiries or complaints from customers, managers, and staff. Ability to write reports and present information clearly.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to interpret information and ensure procedures are followed.

Physical Demands:

Frequent standing, walking, sitting, use of hands, reaching, talking, and hearing. Occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, or crouching. May lift over 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and focus adjustment.

Work Environment:

Travel daily using a company vehicle around the RGV area. Exposure to noise, dirt, dust, grease, machinery, chemicals, and weather conditions. Use of protective gear may be required.
