Job summary

The Virgin Islands Water & Power Authority is seeking a General Maintenance Worker 1st Class to perform major maintenance and repair on the island's water distribution facilities under general supervision.

The role involves inspecting mains, meters and valves for leaks, installing and replacing meters and pipe sections, and repairing pumps and related equipment. A high school diploma with related trades and several years of mechanical, plumbing or electrical maintenance experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with related trade courses.
• Three years of experience in a similar maintenance role.
• Ability to read maps and engineering drawings.

Responsibilities

• Maintains and repairs water distribution system
• Inspects water mains, meters and valves to detect leaks
• Bolts leak proof collars to water mains to stop leaks
• Replaces defective water meters using hand tools
• Replaces damaged pipe sections and seal joints
• Installs packing material in valves to make them watertight and replaces defective water meters
• Drills and threads holes in water mains for service connections, using hand powered tapping tool
• Repairs and maintains pumps; assists with repairing street and sidewalk with concrete
• Operates compactor, jumping jack and elephant foot for backfill compaction

Under general supervision, the General Maintenance Worker 1st Class performs major maintenance and repair on water distribution facilities. An employee in this class is expected to perform the more difficult repair work involved in maintaining and repairing water distribution system.

• Inspects water mains, meters and valves to detect leaks

• Good knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, and tools used in building, maintenance and repair or machine operation trades
• Good knowledge of the operating principles of various electric or gasoline powered equipment such as pumps and generating equipment
• Good knowledge of the fundamentals of water distribution
• Good knowledge of the island's geography and street locations
• Good knowledge of the operation of water storage, treatment and distribution systems and devices
• Good knowledge of potential hazards of the trade and safety precautions connected with water distribution
• Good knowledge of the tools and equipment and their skilled use as required in the work
• Good knowledge of the layout construction functions as applied to construction work
• Ability to use testing apparatus to detect leaks
• Ability to read maps and other engineering drawings and specifications; also to follow diagrams and to make mathematical calculations
• Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public
• Ability to adapt oneself to the performance of a variety of mechanical and other repair assignments
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to write clearly and legibly
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to read and write

High school diploma including courses in the mechanical or plumbing and electrical trade, and three years experience as a General Maintenance Worker 2nd Class, or similar position performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled mechanical, metal, plumbing, and electrical maintenance or repair tasks.
