Job summary

State Sign Shop in Columbia, SC, operates under general supervision to produce digitally printed highway signs and related materials.

Job description

Under general supervision, assists in the production of digitally printed highway signs and related materials for the State Sign Shop. Performs duties related to the operation of digital printing equipment, material preparation, sign finishing, and quality control while ensuring compliance with agency standards, specifications, and safety procedures.

Assists in operating digital printing equipment to produce traffic signs and related materials. Prepares print files, loads materials, and supports print runs to ensure accurate reproduction of designs, colors, and verbiage. Verifies proper file setup, scaling, and layout prior to printing to ensure compliance with Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) standards. Monitors print quality throughout the production process, adjusting as needed to maintain consistency. Operates plotter equipment to cut designs, lettering, and graphics as required for sign production. Monitors plotter quality throughout the production process, adjusting as needed to maintain consistency.

Supports workflow by organizing jobs, staging materials, and maintaining a clean and efficient work area. Coordinates with team members to meet production schedules and deadlines. Inspects printed signs for accuracy, legibility, color consistency, and compliance with MUTCD standards. Identifies and reports any defects or inconsistencies and assists in corrective actions to maintain production quality.

Assists in managing inventory of digital print materials, including inks, reflective sheeting, laminate, and substrates. Accurately records material usage and notifies management of low or damaged inventory.

Performs routine cleaning and basic maintenance of digital printing equipment, including print heads, rollers, and associated components. Assists in troubleshooting minor issues and notify management of equipment concerns.

Rolls and trims sign sheeting onto aluminum blanks in accordance with established production standards. Applies reflective sheeting to the appropriate substrate, ensuring accuracy in design, verbiage, and overall layout. Maintains a high level of quality control by verifying centered text and graphics, proper alignment, and a smooth, bubble-free finish on all completed signs.

Completes inventory activities as directed by the State Sign Shop Management. Verifies quantities of shop production materials, including but not limited to roll reflective sheeting, aluminum blanks, and ACM materials, ensuring accuracy and accountability.

Assists in the organization and packaging of recycled signs for refurbishing. Safely organizes/re-organizes recycling signs submitted by counties and/or sign shop waste to appropriate pallets for transportation to refurbishing site locations. Safely unloads refurbished signs into State Sign Shop inventory areas.

Performs other related tasks requested by supervisor or SCDOT management and responds to emergency events as required by management. Completes related tasks thoroughly and in detail, within a timely manner per the specific task or requested deadline. Completes mandatory training courses, training refreshers, and other SCDOT survey requests prior to deadlines. Adjusts priorities and schedules to accommodate emergency sign production and deliveries. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Six (6) months of trades experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulate objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
