Job description

REPORTS TO: Sr. Assistant Vice President of Facilities Operations

Primary Objective:

The General Maintenance Mechanic will perform a wide variety of maintenance activities to ensure proper levels of care for buildings and grounds throughout the property. This position will also be responsible for oversight of all outside contractors working at the facility.

Job Responsibilities:

1. General maintenance of all facilities equipment:

  • Perform scheduled inspections and identify necessary repairs of operating systems throughout Bjorklunden. Create work orders for all work completed and all scheduled activities.
2. Equipment and facility repairs:
  • Maintain HVAC , electrical, carpentry, mechanical, painting and plumbing as needed.
3. Grounds and Snow Removal:
  • Responsible for all buildings and grounds maintenance.
  • Clean gutters and roof decks including clearing ice.
  • Responsible for snow removal and safety of walks and driveways and parking areas.
  • Rake and clean up areas to maintain a neat appearance.
  • Maintain lawns and flower beds, trees, shrubs, roads, and all landscaping.
  • Use chain saw and wood splitter to supply fire wood.
4. Custodial Responsibilities:
  • Assist with custodial duties in all buildings
5. Other duties:
  • Organize and maintain inventory of supplies, parts and equipment.
  • Oversee work being done by outside contractors.
  • Assist with training, instruction, and supervision of student workers.
  • Operate all equipment in a safe manner.
  • Occasionally support other staff with hosting groups, working in the kitchen, leading chapel tours, etc.
  • Provide a high level of customer service and satisfaction by responding promptly to all customer requests and or complaints and communicate them to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Must be available for occasional after hours, weekend, and call-in duties.
Working Relationships:

Will work collaboratively with all members of the Bjorklunden and Facility Services teams and occupants of the various university buildings where work is being performed. Must be able to provide excellent customer service to all members of the campus community, to respond to and work with students, faculty, staff and visitors in a professional and courteous manner, and to work independently and with team members.

Required Qualifications:

1. Efficient and effective communication with supervisor, other tradesmen and customers.

2. Must possess excellent customer services skills.

3. Self-starter who can complete assigned projects without supervision.

4. Ability to read and follow oral or written instructions.

6. Must possess strong organizational skills (to track paperwork and keep tools and parts organized and inventoried).

7. General knowledge of small engines and experience running a chain saw

8. Must meet requirements for driving Lawrence vehicles.

9. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

10. Must be able to climb and work on a ladder and a lift.

11. Basic computer skills and the ability to learn and use a computer including e-mail and online work orders or instructions.

13. Ability to operate powered hand tools.

Employment Requirements:

1. Must have successful completion of criminal record check, pre-employment physical and pre-work screen, driving record check and reference checks.

2. Must have a valid Driver’s License and must be able to pass the requirements to be a Lawrence University Authorized Driver.

3. Must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
