Job summary

Grand Valley State University is seeking a Facilities Maintenance Technician to support essential functions across campus. The role involves assisting trades, performing cross-trade maintenance, and responding to emergencies.

You will lead and work with student staff, attend safety meetings, and ensure compliance with policies while delivering quality service to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. This full-time, on-site position requires a valid driver's license and willingness to work off

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in building maintenance relevant to essential functions.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Willingness to work off shifts, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
  • Completion of lift training and university-provided certification.
  • Maintenance of applicable licenses and formal training.
  • Excellent attendance record.

Your Role

Here’s what you will be doing:

  • Assist trades and maintenance staff on work assignments and work independently as needed.
  • Perform general building maintenance across multiple trades including electrical, plumbing, painting, floor covering, HVAC (digital/pneumatic), hardware, tile work, sheet metal, masonry, welding, and plastering.
  • Conduct general repair and preventative maintenance of building equipment.
  • Follow work assignments, instructions, labeled information, and safety standards.
  • Provide quality customer service to faculty, staff, students, and campus visitors.
  • Serve as an essential employee, working when others are excused.
  • Use technology such as email, smart devices, and work order systems.
  • Respond to Facilities Services emergencies as necessary.
  • Enforce and support Facilities Services policies.
  • Lead and work with student staff.
  • Attend safety and related meetings.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
About You

The company is looking for:

  • Professional experience in building maintenance relevant to the essential functions.
  • Satisfactory past work performance and excellent attendance record.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Maintenance of applicable licenses, certifications, and formal training.
  • Participation in GVSU training programs and maintenance-related courses.
  • Completion of lift training and certification provided by the university.
  • Willingness to work off shifts, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Grade 3 position with a minimum starting wage of $20.80 per hour.

Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift up to 70 lbs and work at heights up to 70 feet.

  • Perform duties for extended periods (approximately 12 hours/day) and more than 5 days per week.
  • Physical stamina to work long hours and meet essential job functions.
