Job description

Capital Planning and Facilities work to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable, supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university.

Job Summary
  1. Performs semi-skilled maintenance and repair on HVAC systems. Checks air vents and installs window air conditioning units.
  2. Assembles, installs, and/or repairs wiring, electrical and electronic components, machinery, equipment, and appliances.
  3. Repairs and performs minor maintenance on pipe systems and plumbing fixtures, including faucet leaks, vandal-proof stoppers, and shower heads. Clears drains using plunger and spring.
  4. Diagnoses mechanical problems and determines corrective steps, checking blueprints, repair manuals, and parts catalogs as necessary.
  5. Performs routine preventive maintenance to ensure machines run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, and the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.
  6. Repairs or replaces defective equipment parts using hand tools and power tools, and reassembles equipment.
  7. Repairs and replaces drywall, paint, screens, glass, doors and hardware, shade blinds, furniture, lamps, handrails, ceiling and floor tiles, baseboard molding strips, etc. Repairs desk lamps, ceiling lights, sweepers, wet vacs, etc. Replaces light switches, ceiling lights, and fluorescent fixtures.
  8. Maintains parts, supplies, and equipment and advises supervisor when supplies need to be ordered. Uses a range of tools, from common hand and power tools to precision measuring instruments and testing devices.
  9. Assists in directing the work of others.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned, including general building maintenance. Drives university vehicles as needed. Works any shift as required. Provides 24-hour emergency response and assists with snow removal activities.
Qualifications
Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent (HSED or GED)
Work Experience
  • At least 2 years of multi-craft maintenance experience in facilities upkeep.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon hire.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires physical mobility, effective communication, operation of machinery and tools, and the ability to work in various environments, including heights and tight spaces. Must be available for work during inclement weather and emergencies, including snow removal.

Additional Information

Availability for daytime training for the first 6 months is required.

Work Location

Bloomington, Indiana

Salary

$22.11/hour, $45,988.80 annually. A shift differential of $.50/hour applies for hours worked between 3:00 P.M. and 8:00 A.M., with a minimum of 6 hours during this period.

Work Hours

Scheduled for 3:30 P.M. - 12:00 A.M., Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Monday.
