In Kansas City, Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies (FM&T) manages and operates the U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) Kansas City National Security Campus. Summary
The General Machinist Trainee will be enrolled in a training program to develop skills in operating machinery and manufacturing precision metal parts, including hands-on training in manual and CNC machining techniques. The program includes 9 months of classroom training and 3 months of on-the-job machining training. Upon completion, trainees will receive a machining certificate and must pass a machinist assessment to be converted to a full-time General Machinist role.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Attend 9-month classroom training followed by 3-month on-the-job training. Obtain a machining certificate and pass a machinist assessment to become a General Machinist.
  • Operate machines such as lathes, mills, and CNC equipment to produce metal parts.
  • Interpret blueprints and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Program and set up CNC lathes and mills.
  • Maintain safety standards and proper handling of machinery and tools.
  • Inspect parts for quality and accuracy.
  • Understand metallurgical properties and machining reactions.
  • Apply lean manufacturing principles like Six Sigma, 5S, and TPM to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Secure parts properly during machining using work-holding principles.
  • Edit machine language as needed.
  • Use tools, fixtures, measuring instruments, and cutting tools appropriately.
  • Check produced parts against standards, rework if necessary, and perform in-process inspections.
Minimum Requirements
  • US Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a US DOE Q level security clearance.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work any shift.
  • Completion of Machine Tool Technology courses from high school or vocational programs by May 31, 2025.
