Job description

General Description
The General Machinist is responsible for machining, assembling, and finishing rare earth magnet material and hardware to meet customer specifications. This role involves setting up, operating, and maintaining various machining and finishing equipment while ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.

Major Functions:

  1. Optimize Safety/Minimize Risk
    Wear required PPE.
    Adhere to required safety precautions.
    Read, Understand, and Follow Work Instructions (WI) and Process Control Standards (PCS).
    Access Paradigm to review and/or print WI or PCS.
    Recommend revisions and updates to WI and PCS.
  2. Interpret Customer Drawings
    Verify drawing part numbers and revision levels match manufacturing routers.
    Review drawings to obtain specified dimensions, features, tolerances, and customer requirements.
  3. Set Up Machinery
    Install proper tooling, fixtures, and measuring equipment.
    Select appropriate programs and calibrate measuring tools as required.
    Obtain first piece inspection approval before running jobs.
  4. Maintain Machinery and Work Area
    Clean and organize machinery, equipment, and workstations.
    Fill coolant or oil in machines as needed.
    Perform required preventative maintenance.
    Request reorder of consumables as necessary.
  5. Operate Various Machining and Finishing Equipment
    CNC and manual machining equipment, including:
    • Centerless grinders
    • CNC mills and lathes
    • Wire EDM machines
    • Honing, drilling, scoring, and chamfering tools
    • Double disc grinders
    • Tumblers, ultrasonic cleaners, and ovens
    Ensure operations meet established quality standards and production rates.
  6. Verify and Accurately Record Data
    Enter data into ERP computer systems and manufacturing routers.
    Maintain records for inspections and quality assurance.
  7. Perform In-Process Inspections
    Utilize precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, and optical comparators.
    Ensure conformance to customer specifications and manufacturing requirements.
  8. Adhere to EEC Escalation Policy
    Report issues affecting quality, safety, or productivity to supervisors.

Mandatory Role Requirements:

  1. Knowledge/Education/Certification
    High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical training or certification preferred.
  2. Experience
    1–2 years of machining experience preferred.
  3. Role Complexity
    Requires a solid understanding of machining processes, use of precision instruments, and ability to follow standard procedures.
  4. Degree of Inspection
    Requires frequent use of precision instruments for detailed visual inspections.
  5. Responsibility for Accuracy
    Errors may result in moderate financial loss or production delays.
  6. Decision Making
    Follows set procedures with some minor operational decision-making responsibilities.
  7. Contacts with Others/Communications
    Occasional verbal and written communication outside the department.
  8. Supervision Received
    Works independently while following supervisor-assigned tasks; responsible for identifying and correcting errors.
  9. Tools, Machines, and Equipment Used
    Operates complex instruments, CNC machinery, and other machining tools with required competency.
  10. Responsibility for Equipment and Work Areas
    Accountable for machine setup, maintenance, and cleanliness.
  11. Responsibility for Confidentiality
    Minimal responsibility beyond general company policy adherence.
  12. Hazards & Working Conditions
    Moderate risk of minor injuries such as cuts or bruises.
  13. Mental & Physical Demands
    Requires sustained physical effort, attention to detail, and ability to work with diverse operations. Ability to lift 20 lbs up to 40 lbs with assistance.
