Job description

Location: Chantilly, VA
Salary: $100,000–$115,000

The Opportunity

We are looking for a General Foreman who knows how to turn a busy construction site into an organized, productive, and safe operation. This is not a “stand around and point at things” position. We need a seasoned field leader who can coordinate crews, keep production moving, communicate with project leadership, solve problems before they become expensive problems, and make sure the work gets done correctly the first time.

The ideal General Foreman is part field leader, part problem solver, part traffic controller, and part professional fire extinguisher. You know that construction rarely goes exactly according to plan, so you bring the experience, communication skills, and good judgment needed to keep everyone moving in the right direction.

This is an opportunity for someone who takes pride in building more than projects. You build teams, accountability, momentum, and a jobsite culture where people know what is expected and have the tools and support to get it done.

What You’ll Be Doing

As the General Foreman, you will provide hands‑on leadership across daily field operations, working closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, subcontractors, vendors, and craft professionals.

Your responsibilities will include:

Directing and coordinating field crews to maintain productivity, quality, and schedule expectations.

Reviewing project plans, specifications, schedules, and scopes of work to understand what needs to happen and when.

Organizing manpower, equipment, materials, and daily activities so the field operation stays ahead rather than constantly playing catch‑up.

Providing clear direction to Foremen and craft personnel.

Monitoring production and identifying potential schedule issues before they become full‑blown schedule headaches.

Coordinating multiple crews and activities working simultaneously throughout the project.

Working closely with project leadership to establish priorities and communicate field conditions.

Maintaining a strong understanding of project schedules and upcoming work.

Coordinating material deliveries, equipment needs, site access, and manpower requirements.

Ensuring work is performed according to plans, specifications, company standards, and applicable codes.

Inspecting completed and ongoing work for quality and completeness.

Identifying deficiencies and making sure corrective action happens quickly.

Helping troubleshoot field issues and developing practical solutions that keep production moving.

Communicating daily progress, manpower needs, schedule concerns, and project challenges to leadership.

Supporting project scheduling and helping coordinate short‑term and look‑ahead planning.

Working with subcontractors and vendors to maintain expectations for safety, quality, productivity, and schedule.

Maintaining a clean, organized, and professional jobsite.

Helping coordinate inspections and ensuring work is ready when inspectors arrive.

Monitoring site logistics and adjusting plans when field conditions change.

Tracking productivity and recognizing opportunities to improve efficiency.

Mentoring Foremen, Leadmen, and less‑experienced field personnel.

Holding crews accountable while maintaining a respectful and team‑oriented environment.

Participating in project meetings and providing valuable field insight.

Reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, specifications, and project documentation.

Communicating changes in scope, design, sequencing, or field conditions to the appropriate project personnel.

Assisting with project closeout activities, punch lists, and final completion.

Making sure the jobsite does not become a treasure hunt for tools, materials, paperwork, or answers.

Leadership Matters

A great General Foreman does more than tell people what to do. You understand why the work matters and how each crew, task, and milestone fits into the bigger picture.

You will be expected to lead by example. That means showing up prepared, communicating clearly, respecting the people around you, and maintaining high standards even when the schedule gets tight.

You should be comfortable saying, “Here’s the problem, and here’s how we’re going to fix it.”

You should also be comfortable saying, “I don't know yet, but I'll find out.”

That combination of confidence and common sense goes a long way in construction.

Safety First. Always.

Safety is not a poster on the job trailer wall. It is part of how the project gets built.

The General Foreman will help promote a strong safety culture by:

Reinforcing company safety policies and procedures.

Conducting or participating in toolbox talks and safety meetings.

Identifying unsafe conditions and correcting them promptly.

Ensuring crews understand safe work practices.

Supporting proper PPE use and jobsite housekeeping.

Communicating safety concerns immediately.

Encouraging employees to speak up when something does not look right.

Helping create a site where production never comes at the expense of safety.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for a construction professional with substantial field experience and the confidence to lead people, schedules, and production.

The ideal candidate will have:

Several years of progressive construction field experience.

Previous experience as a Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent, or similar field leadership role.

Strong knowledge of construction means, methods, sequencing, and field operations.

Demonstrated ability to supervise crews and coordinate multiple activities.

Strong blueprint and plan‑reading skills.

Solid understanding of project schedules and construction sequencing.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

The ability to prioritize competing demands without losing sight of the big picture.

Strong problem‑solving and decision‑making abilities.

A proactive approach to identifying issues before they become emergencies.

A commitment to quality workmanship.

A serious commitment to jobsite safety.

The ability to work effectively with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, and field employees.

Basic computer and construction technology skills.

The ability to maintain accurate field documentation and communicate project information effectively.

The Personality We’re After

You do not need to be the loudest person on the jobsite. You do need to be the person people listen to.

You are organized without being rigid, confident without being difficult, and demanding without being unreasonable. You understand that crews perform better when expectations are clear and leadership is consistent.

You can walk onto a complicated jobsite, look around, ask the right questions, and quickly figure out what needs attention.

You are also the kind of person who notices when the crew is running low on material before the crew is standing around waiting for material.

That may sound like a small thing. It is not.

Good General Foremen understand that hundreds of small decisions can determine whether a project runs smoothly or turns into a daily episode of “Well, that wasn't in the plan.”

Why This Role Matters

The General Foreman is a critical link between project leadership and the people actually building the work.

You will have a direct impact on productivity, quality, safety, morale, schedule, and ultimately the success of the project.

If you enjoy being in the middle of the action, solving problems, leading people, and watching a project physically take shape because of the work you helped coordinate, this could be an excellent opportunity.

Location: Chantilly, Virginia

If you are an experienced field leader who can bring structure to the chaos, keep crews moving, solve problems with a level head, and take genuine pride in the work being built, we want to hear from you.
