Job summary

Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska is seeking an experienced General Counsel for the Office of the President in Juneau. This senior role provides professional legal counsel across tribal government, federal-tribal relations, environmental and natural resources law, and economic development to protect tribal sovereignty.

You will supervise attorneys, manage outside counsel, oversee contracts and policies, and advise leadership on complex legal issues affecting tribal

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate from ABA-accredited law school.
• Member in good standing of the Alaska Bar or ability to become a member.
• Eight (8) years’ experience practicing law, including at least 2 years supervising attorneys or legal staff.

Responsibilities

• Review and recommend action on complex legal matters for Tribal Administration and governing bodies.
• Provide legal advice, interpretation, and opinions on legal matters.
• Represent the Tribe at meetings and report to the President and governing body.
• Provide and oversee legal representation to employees regarding tribal operations.
• Oversee legal instruments (policies, contracts, leases, regulations).
• Manage legal budget and supervise GC staff, including hiring and evaluations.
• Oversee outside counsel engagement and manage contracts, scopes of work, and invoicing.
