Job description

A client is seeking a senior general counsel-level legal leader to serve as the top in-house advisor for a growing construction organization with a major field footprint. This high-impact role supports executive leadership with project risk, business strategy, labor matters, and corporate growth, offering a visible seat at the leadership table and direct influence on operational decision making. The position is expected to shape legal strategy across a fast-moving, union-aligned environment while balancing legal protection with practical business momentum.

The client will support and advise on construction operations, contract strategy, enterprise risk, and corporate initiatives. Responsibilities include reviewing, drafting, and negotiating a broad range of agreements related to construction activity, such as customer contracts, subcontractor agreements, vendor terms, confidentiality agreements, and strategic arrangements. The role will also provide legal guidance on claims, disputes, and contested matter, help determine resolution strategy, manage outside counsel where needed, and advise on risk allocation, project exposure, insurance-related issues, and dispute avoidance best practices.

The role will further support legal planning for acquisitions, strategic transactions, due diligence, and post-transaction risk assessment, and will counsel leaders on labor and employment matters affecting a unionized workforce, including collective bargaining and workforce compliance considerations. It will guide compliance matters tied to construction operations, employment law, safety requirements, licensing, and related regulatory obligations, while helping build practical legal processes, internal controls, and training approaches to improve consistency and reduce risk. Required qualifications include a Juris Doctor and active bar admission, at least 10 years of legal experience with strong construction law depth in contract negotiation, claims, and risk management, and prior senior general counsel or comparable in-house leadership experience supporting a construction-focused organization, along with strong judgment, executive maturity, communication, negotiation, and leadership capabilities; experience with labor law and union environments and with mergers and acquisitions diligence is expected, and preferred traits include proactive autonomy, ability to manage competing priorities, and the ability to combine legal precision with commercial awareness.
