Responsibilities

• Review, draft, negotiate, and manage a wide variety of agreements including vendor contracts, service agreements, NDAs, consulting agreements, and employment-related documents.
• Support corporate governance and entity management across the office and affiliates.
• Assist with acquisitions, dispositions, financings, joint ventures, and strategic initiatives.
• Coordinate legal due diligence and transactions with external counsel and advisors.
• Maintain corporate records, governance docs, and organizational structures.
• Support real estate-related legal matters including purchase agreements, leases, construction contracts.
• Coordinate with external counsel on zoning, land use, permits, and property issues.
• Serve as a legal resource across investment activities, operating businesses, and personal affairs.
• Engage with trust and estate attorneys, tax advisors, bankers, and insurance professionals as needed.

Job description

An investment office based in Dallas, Texas is seeking a General Counsel to serve as a trusted legal advisor across the Principal's business, investment, real estate, and personal affairs.

The investment office oversees a diverse range of activities, including private investments, operating businesses, real estate holdings, oil and gas interests, aviation assets, technology ventures, ranch operations, and family-related initiatives. Working closely with the Principal, Chief of Staff, external advisors, the General Counsel will help manage legal matters across this interconnected ecosystem while ensuring risks are appropriately identified and managed.

This is a unique opportunity for an attorney early in their career who is seeking broad exposure beyond a traditional law firm environment. The role is designed for a highly analytical, business-minded professional with a strong grounding in corporate, transactional, investment, or financial matters who enjoys solving complex problems, navigating ambiguity, and serving as a strategic thought partner to senior leadership.

Operating within a lean and highly collaborative environment, the General Counsel will work across a wide variety of matters, including corporate governance, contracts, transactions, real estate, entity management, regulatory compliance, and coordination with outside counsel. The successful candidate will possess strong legal fundamentals, exceptional judgment, intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to engage in both strategic and hands-on work.

Key Responsibilities

Corporate, Transactional & Governance Matters

• Review, draft, negotiate, and manage a wide variety of agreements, including vendor contracts, service agreements, NDAs, consulting agreements, employment-related documents, and commercial contracts
• Support corporate governance and entity management activities across the investment office and affiliated entities
• Assist with acquisitions, dispositions, financing transactions, joint ventures, and other strategic business initiatives
• Coordinate legal due diligence and transaction execution alongside external counsel and advisors.
• Maintain corporate records, governance documentation, and organizational structures
• Support legal matters related to the acquisition, ownership, financing, operation, and disposition of real estate assets
• Review and negotiate purchase agreements, leases, construction contracts, and related documentation
• Coordinate with external counsel on zoning, land use, permitting, and property-related matters
• Assist with legal issues relating to ranch operations, vendors, contractors, and service providers
• Serve as a legal resource across the office’s investment activities, operating businesses, financial relationships, and personal affairs, including matters involving private investments, financing arrangements, banking relationships, and other financial services
• Coordinate with external trust and estate attorneys, tax advisors, accountants, bankers, investment professionals, insurance professionals, and other advisors
• Support the review of investment, financing, and other financial documentation, coordinating with outside counsel and advisors as appropriate
• Help evaluate and implement processes, policies, and controls that support effective operations
• Conduct Identify legal, regulatory, and operational risks and provide practical recommendations to mitigate exposure
• Assist with employment-related matters, including policies, agreements, and compliance issues
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments that may impact the investment office or its affiliated entities
• Support insurance reviews, claims management, and related risk management initiatives

Strategic & Special Projects

• Attend Conduct research and provide analysis on a wide variety of business, legal, and operational topics
• Assist with special projects and initiatives as directed by the Principal and Chief of Staff
• Serve as a thought partner on new opportunities, investments, and emerging areas of interest
• Engage in projects that may extend beyond traditional legal responsibilities in support of the family's broader objectives

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
• Active membership in good standing with a state bar
• 3–5 years of legal experience, preferably with a leading law firm or sophisticated in-house legal department
• Strong foundation in corporate law, commercial transactions, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, financial services, investment management, real estate, or related practice areas
• Experience advising financial institutions, investment firms, private investment vehicles, family offices, or other sophisticated financial or investment-related clients is preferred
• Experience reviewing and negotiating contracts and managing complex legal matters
• Demonstrated ability to work directly with senior executives, business leaders, or clients
• Interest in expanding into new areas, including investment office operations, trusts and estates, tax, employment, real estate, and governance matters
