Job summary

Jobot is seeking a General Counsel for a leading Heavy Civil Construction firm in California. The role oversees all legal matters, corporate governance, risk and strategy, reporting to leadership in a fast‑growing engineering environment.

The ideal candidate has a Juris Doctor and 5+ years as GC or similar, with strong experience in governance, employment law, and regulatory compliance, and a proven record of strategic legal advice.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience as General Counsel or similar in engineering or related industries.
• Strong knowledge of corporate governance, employment law, regulatory compliance and risk management.
• Experience in drafting, reviewing and negotiating varied legal documents.
• Proven ability to provide strategic legal advice and manage legal risk.
• Excellent negotiation and communication skills; ability to explain complex legal matters clearly.

Responsibilities

• Provide expert legal support to leadership on governance, risk management, compliance and employment law.
• Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of contracts, policies and procedures.
• Ensure company compliance with applicable laws and regulations across jurisdictions.
• Develop and implement policies related to legal matters aligned with company goals.
• Oversee employment law matters including contracts, rights and disputes.
• Oversee risk management strategies and mitigation of potential legal risks.
• Coordinate with external counsel to ensure cost‑effective support.
• Stay updated on legal changes affecting the company and advise leadership.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced General Counsel to join our dynamic engineering team. In this critical role, you will be responsible for overseeing all legal matters, ensuring corporate governance, managing risk, and providing strategic legal advice to our leadership team. You will play a crucial role in shaping the future of our company, making significant contributions to our strategic decisions, policies, and procedures. Responsibilities

1. Provide expert legal support to the leadership team on all legal matters, including corporate governance, risk management, regulatory compliance, and employment law.
2. Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of legal documents such as contracts, agreements, policies, and procedures.
3. Ensure company compliance with all laws, regulations, and obligations in the jurisdictions in which we operate.
4. Develop and implement company policies and procedures related to legal matters, ensuring they align with company objectives and legal requirements.
5. Manage all employment law issues, providing legal advice and guidance on matters such as employment contracts, employee rights, and dispute resolutions.
6. Oversee the company’s risk management strategies, identifying potential legal risks and developing mitigation strategies.
7. Coordinate with external legal counsel as necessary, managing these relationships and ensuring cost‑effective legal support.
8. Keep abreast of changes in laws and regulations that may affect the company, providing updates and strategic advice to the leadership team.

Qualifications

1. Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school is required.
2. A minimum of 5 years of experience as a General Counsel or a similar role in the engineering or related industry.
3. Extensive knowledge of corporate governance, employment law, regulatory compliance, and risk management.
4. Proven experience in legal writing, drafting, and reviewing a wide range of legal documents.
5. Strong experience in providing strategic legal advice and consulting, with a proven track record of successfully managing legal risks.
6. Excellent negotiation skills, with the ability to represent the company in complex legal discussions.
7. Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal matters in clear, understandable language.
8. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions based on legal considerations.
9. Current license to practice law in the state is required.
10. High ethical standards and professionalism, with a commitment to confidentiality and integrity.
