Job summary

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) is seeking a construction inspector in Hawaii to independently inspect public works construction projects. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with plans, specifications, and safety codes.

The ideal candidate must have a high school diploma and at least two years of journey-level construction experience. A valid driver's license and TWIC clearance are also required.

Recruitment Number DOT-HAR-2025-02

Salary $5,359 to $5,944 per month (SR-16, Step C to I). Salary includes shortage category differential.

Responsibilities

Independently inspect all phases of public works construction and major maintenance projects—including buildings, wharves, piers, pipelines, breakwaters, seawalls, paving, and dredging—for conformance with plans, specifications, contracts, regulations, and standard methods of work. Ensure compliance with designs, specifications, and applicable workmanship, material, and safety codes and standards. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Basic Education/Experience: Graduation from high school or equivalent, or work experience that demonstrates the ability to read and apply oral and written instructions, write simply and directly, and perform arithmetic computations.
  • General Experience: Two (2) years of journey-level experience in one or more construction trades that provided the full range of specialized knowledge, skills, abilities, and practices used in the construction industry.
  • Specialized Experience: One (1) year of (A) construction inspection work or (B) full‑time supervisory work over skilled trades workers in the construction industry, with responsibility for interpreting plans and specifications and inspecting workmanship and materials for adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Non‑Qualifying Experience: Experience as an engineering aid, draftsman, equipment operator, materials inspector, automotive mechanic, machinist, or welder will NOT be accepted as qualifying.
  • Substitution: Relevant substitutions as described in the complete Minimum Qualification Requirements will apply.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) Clearance: Applicants must undergo a fingerprint-based criminal history record check and must not have been convicted of a disqualifying offense within seven years from the date of appointment. Upon hire, the applicant’s cost for the records check will be reimbursed after submission of the receipt.
  • Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Legal Authorization to Work: Applicants must be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
