Job summary

City and County of Honolulu is hiring three Assistant Construction Inspectors in the Wastewater Engineering and Construction Division to inspect sewer line installations and appurtenances for compliance with plans, specs, and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities include inspecting construction work, monitoring activities such as grading and backfill, preparing inspection reports, and verifying progress for contractor payments. Field work and occasional travel to sites are expected.

Qualifications

  • High school education or equivalent required with ability to perform essential duties.
  • One year of experience inspecting or supervising construction work.
  • Substitution options may meet education requirements.
  • Candidate must have valid driver's license prior to appointment.

\"Be the Eyes Behind Every Successful Construction Project\"


Department of Environmental Services, Wastewater Engineering and Construction Division, is looking to fill three (3) Assistant Construction Inspector positions. The position inspects various phases of wastewater construction projects that involve the installation of sewer lines and appurtenances to assure compliance with plans, specifications, and other contractual agreements. The position also inspects work for compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, including but not limited to, those imposed by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES).


What You Will Do:


  • Inspect construction work to ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and contract requirements.

  • Monitor construction activities including grading, paving, concrete, reinforcing steel, pile driving, and backfill.

  • Prepare inspection reports and maintain accurate project documentation.

  • Verify completed work for contractor payments and project progress.

  • Enforce contract compliance by documenting deficiencies and coordinating corrective actions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Special Working Conditions:


  • Work in field environments with exposure to construction and traffic hazards, electrical hazards, paint fumes, sewer treatment chemicals, sewage gases, and moving equipment.

  • Perform physical field work, including climbing ladders, entering trenches, tanks, and manholes, crawling through pipes, carrying equipment, and walking on uneven terrain.

  • May be required to travel to job sites using a City or personal vehicle.

  • Regular work hours are anticipated; however, may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and during emergency situations.

  • Serve as a Disaster Response Worker during declared civil defense emergencies.


Assistant Construction Inspector

(SR-16) salary of $5,359 per month includes shortage differential.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Equivalent to a high school education. Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.


EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT

One (1) year of experience in inspecting or supervising construction work.


Examples of Qualifying Experience: Inspectors, superintendents, trades supervisors, working trades supervisors, etc.with experience of such scope, level and responsibilityas to conclusively demonstrate the ability to perform the duties ofthe position.


Substitution


  1. 1. An Associate's degree in architectural or engineering drafting from an accredited college or university; or in the Applied Trades, Architectural, Engineering and CAD Technologies, and Carpentry Technology programs at Honolulu Community College, or similar academic programs from an accredited college or university.

  2. 2. A Bachelor's degree in Architecture or Engineering from an accredited college or university.


The education requirement must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at an accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, proper documentation, e.g., a foreign credential evaluation (FCE), must be provided.
