WORK SCHEDULE:
Monday - Friday, shift times depend on current availability.
SUMMARY:
The custodian is responsible for cleaning and maintaining order in areas such as classrooms, bathrooms, offices, cafeterias, common areas, gym and fitness areas, and perimeter grounds. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, polishing floors, removing chips, trash, or refuse, dusting equipment, furniture, fixtures, polishing metal fixtures, providing supplies and minor maintenance, and cleaning lavatories, showers, and restrooms.
REQUIREMENTS:
Day Cleaning:
- Open building and check for maintenance issues.
- Respond to requests by principals and teachers.
- Police entrance areas and spot clean door glass.
- Clean up cafeteria daily after breakfast and lunch.
- Dust mop hallways after class breaks as needed.
- Monitor restrooms after each class break: mop floors, spot clean sinks, vanities, countertops, mirrors, floors, walls, pick up paper, flush toilets and urinals, and take out trash.
- Pick up trash outside of the building at least once daily.
- Change light bulbs and tubes as needed.
- Clean and mop any accidents that occur during the day.
- Clean electrical rooms and storage closets as needed.
- Sweep entranceways, including snow removal from entrances and sidewalks.
General Cleaning:
- Perform general cleanup of all buildings as directed, ensuring rooms are maintained and fully equipped.
- Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
- Service, clean, and supply rooms.
- Gather and empty trash and recycling, including transporting trash to collection points.
- Clean inside window panes, glass surfaces, and mirrors to a height no greater than body height plus arm's extension.
- Polish metal fixtures or trimmings.
- Complete non-routine cleaning tasks, handle emergency cleaning requests, and heavy cleaning jobs upon request.
- Maintain and upkeep cleaning equipment, supplies, and products.
- Report repairs and replacements needed.
- Mix and dispose of cleaning solutions properly.
- Follow all health and safety regulations.
- Ensure safe and sanitary storage of cleaning products.
Floors:
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum floors.
- Spot clean carpets.
- Steam clean or shampoo carpets as needed or per contract.
- Use electrical scrubbing and polishing machines for burnishing, scrubbing, and polishing floors.
- Follow procedures for chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage.
- Replenish consumables like soap, toilet paper, and paper towels as required.
- Use chemical agents as directed, following proper instructions and training.
- Perform any additional duties assigned by the supervisor.
Bathroom Cleaning:
- Clean toilets, urinals, sinks, baths, showers, and drinking fountains; wipe surfaces.
- Replenish consumables such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper.
- Empty trash and sanitary bins.
- Dust fans and vents.
- Clean piping.
- Mop and scrub floors.
- Clean grout as needed.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
- Handle heavy janitorial equipment and tools.
- Follow verbal directions and schedules.
- Work well alone, with a partner, or in a team.
- Be reliable, punctual, and professional.
- Adapt to changing schedules.
- Exhibit excellent time management and attention to detail.
SCOPE/COMPLEXITY:
Candidates must exhibit strong attention to detail, work well under minimal supervision, and follow directions from supervisors. Excellent communication skills and teamwork are essential. Must be physically capable of standing, walking, bending, reaching, stretching, pushing, pulling, and lifting repeatedly, with the ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs.
