Job description

Organizational context: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a global organization focused on sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Within UNDP, the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) develops policy and guidance. The Gender Team within BPPS leads the implementation of the Gender Equality Strategy 2026-2029, aiming to integrate gender equality across all UNDP work and transform systems that perpetuate inequality.

Job purpose: This role is crucial for ensuring UNDP's accountability to its gender equality commitments as outlined in the Strategic Plan and Gender Equality Strategy. The Gender Specialist will lead the implementation of UN-SWAP and GEAP frameworks to advance UN-System wide gender equality efforts and interagency coordination. A key function is to spearhead UNDP's initiatives in tracking financial investments dedicated to gender equality. Furthermore, the position is responsible for generating and providing reliable, data-driven insights on gender equality to inform strategic decision-making and programming across the organization. This involves leveraging data analytics and reporting to support the effective integration of gender equality principles into UNDP's development work.

Responsibilities: The Gender Specialist, Accountability and Reporting, will ensure UNDP's accountability to its gender equality commitments, aligning with the Strategic Plan and Gender Equality Strategy. This involves coordinating and delivering comprehensive gender equality reporting, including annual strategy implementation reports, GEAP, UN-SWAP, and ECOSOC reports. The role provides technical and coordination support for the Gender Steering and Implementation Committee (GSIC) and advises on integrating gender equality into manager performance criteria. A significant responsibility is leading the implementation of the UN-SWAP and GEAP, developing action plans, liaising with relevant units, and representing UNDP in interagency coordination spaces. The role also leads efforts to track financial investments for gender equality using the gender marker, ensuring quality standards and providing support to country offices. Finally, the specialist will collect, analyze, and visualize gender-related data to support evidence-based decision-making, developing reports and policy briefs, and strengthening data capacities within regional hubs and country offices.

Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in statistics, feminist economics, data science, gender studies, or a related field is required. Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field with two additional years of experience will be considered. Proficiency in statistical software and data visualization tools is essential. Fluency in English is mandatory.

Work experience: A minimum of five years of progressive professional experience in accountability, reporting, and/or data analysis is required with a Master's degree, or seven years with a Bachelor's degree. Technical expertise in gender equality is desired, with feminist economics being an advantage. Experience in data science, analytics, and visualization, particularly with AI-driven analytics, is preferred.
