Job Summary:
The Gearbox Assembler Field Service Support is a hybrid role, combining both workshop and field service responsibilities. In the workshop, the assembler disassembles and assembles power transmission systems, including wind turbine gearboxes, helical gear units, and other machinery, following blueprints and assembly protocols. They inspect components, identify failures, and recommend replacements. This role will primarily report to the Assembly Manager. On field service calls, the assembler travels together with an experienced technician to wind turbine sites to inspect, repair, install, and start-up gear units. This position requires physical capability for climbing nacelles and using various tools and equipment. The role involves both independent and team collaboration, ensuring quality and accuracy in all tasks. Additional duties may be assigned by the Field Service supervisor.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Disassembly and Assembly: Disassemble and assemble various power transmission systems, including wind turbine gearboxes, helical gear units, and other machinery, using blueprints and assembly protocols.
  2. Inspection and Reporting: Inspect disassembled parts, identify failed components, and report issues. Advise on necessary replacements and corrective actions. Inspections and reporting via Videoscope.
  3. Field Service: Travel to customer wind turbine sites to inspect, repair, install, and start-up gear units and other transmission parts as requested by the service manager.
  4. Maintenance of Quality: Ensure accuracy and quality during both disassembly and reassembly, maintaining high standards for the final product.
  5. Collaboration and Independence: Work independently or as part of a team, overseeing tasks to ensure completion in accordance with procedures and safety standards.
  6. Tool and Equipment Usage: Use various tools and equipment, including parts washers, freezers, ovens, cranes, forklifts, presses, torches, hand tools, and power tools.
  7. Work Environment: Maintain a clean and organized work environment, adhering to safety guidelines and operational protocols.
  8. Climbing and Physical Demands: Must be physically capable of climbing wind turbine nacelles for field service duties, which can range from 80 to 120 meters, and working in high or challenging environments. Additionally, must be able to lift, push, and carry materials and tools weighing up to 55 lbs.
  9. Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or service manager.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:
Knowledge/Skills:

  1. Technical Knowledge:
    Understanding of power transmission systems, including gearboxes, helical gear units, planetary gears, and other machinery. Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprints, parts lists, and assembly protocols.
  2. Mechanical Skills:
    Strong mechanical aptitude for disassembling and assembling complex machinery. Skilled in using a variety of hand tools, power tools, and equipment (e.g., cranes, forklifts, presses, torches).
  3. Inspection & Problem-Solving:
    Ability to inspect parts, identify failures, and determine corrective actions. Knowledge of component failure analysis and recommending replacement parts.
  4. Safety & Quality Focus:
    Awareness of safety protocols and adherence to operational standards. Ability to maintain quality control during both disassembly and reassembly.
  5. Communication & Teamwork:
    Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members. Strong communication skills for reporting and advising on parts, repairs, and replacements. Basic English skills are required for this role, but we welcome non-English speakers to apply who are willing to learn and improve their English over time.

Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent: Required.
Technical Certification or Associate's Degree: Preferred (e.g., Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, or related fields).

Experience:

  1. Previous Experience:
    At least 2-3 years of experience working with power transmission systems, gearboxes, or related mechanical systems. Experience with field service work, particularly in wind turbine maintenance or similar machinery, is a plus.
  2. Field Service Experience:
    Ability to perform hands-on repairs and installations in the field, including working at heights and in confined spaces.

Physical and Travel Requirements:

  1. Climbing & Physical Stamina: Must be physically capable of climbing wind turbine nacelles and working in challenging environments.
  2. Manual Dexterity & Strength: Ability to handle heavy tools and equipment during disassembly, assembly, and repair work.
  3. Travel: This position requires travel up to 20%- 40% depending on assignment. Employee must be available on short notice. Travel notifications are usually provided at least 48 hours in advance. Project assignments can vary from three days up to three weeks. A valid US- Driver’s License is required.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

  1. Certification from MSHA
  2. Hands-on work experience as a Field Service or Wind Technician on a Wind Farm
  3. Relevant work experience e.g. electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, maintenance/troubleshooting in a military, industrial, or automotive industry
  4. Lathe experience is helpful but not required
  5. Basic knowledge in MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)
