Job summary

Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Erie, PA is seeking a Gate Crew member to support racing operations. This hands-on role involves schooling horses, setting and operating the starting gate, and ensuring a safe, fair start for every race.

Applicants should have experience with riding or handling horses, starting gate knowledge, and the ability to obtain a Pennsylvania Racing License. A High School Diploma is required.

Qualifications

• Candidate must be hard working and motivated to work in a team environment.
• Candidate must have previous riding or handling horses.
• Candidate must have previous starting gate experience and knowledge of PA Racing Rules.
• Candidate is required to be able to obtain/maintain a Pennsylvania Racing License.

Responsibilities

• School horses in the morning and set up the starting gate for each race.
• Ensure the best start possible and familiarize young horses with the gate.
• Move starting stands to each distance and perform equipment changes as needed.
• Load and handle horses for each race and assist in any duties assigned by the Racing Department.

Job Summary

Join our Racing Team and play a key role in preparing horses and ensuring a safe, fair start for every race. This hands‑on role involves schooling horses, setting and operating the starting gate, and supporting race operations to keep race day running smoothly.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Candidate is responsible for schooling horses in the morning, set up gate for the start of each race and ensure the best start possible. Candidate will teach and familiarize young horses with the gate to break and school horses on the starter’s list. Candidate will set gate on track, responsible for numbers on gate, rake tire tracks before and after the race, proper procedures for getting gate on and off track each race, move starting stands to each starting distance, make equipment changes on the horse, load and handle horses for each race, and assist in loading horses that pull up during and after the race. Candidate will contribute to the Racing Department team by overseeing and accomplishing all other duties as assigned.

Required Skills And Abilities

Candidate must be hard working and motivated ability to work in a team environment. Candidate must have previous experience in either riding or handling horses. Candidate must have previous starting gate experience and knowledge of related PA Racing Rules. Candidate is required to be able to obtain/maintain a Pennsylvania Racing License.

Education And Experience

High School Diploma or equivalent.
