Job summary

City of Monroe (NC) seeks a skilled welder to fabricate and weld natural gas facilities and related appurtenances. The role covers shop and field welding, maintaining tap equipment, and ensuring safe installation and maintenance of gas lines.

The incumbent will design and fabricate meter sets and regulator stations, assist with repairs, read utility maps, manage welding shop activities, and be available for after-hours emergencies and on-call duties.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school and considerable experience in arc welding of utility pipelines.
  • Ability to pass API 1104 welding qualification.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A CDL within six months.
  • CPR and basic first aid certification within one year.

Job description

Performs complex technical work in the fabrication and welding of natural gas facilities and appurtenances; does related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Gas System Manager.

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires kneeling, pushing, pulling, lifting, and grasping; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts at or within arms' length, and operation of machines; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, atmospheric conditions, and oils.

Performing welding in the shop and in the field; maintaining tap equipment; ensuring the safe installation and maintenance of natural gas facilities and appurtenances; designing and fabricating meter sets; assisting with natural gas system repair. Fabricates commercial/industrial meter sets, regulator stations, and performs installations.

Performs welding of steel main/service lines including removing, replacement, relocation, and abandonment; performs and oversees tapping and stopping gas flow. Performs welding activities for new steel pipe service lines and steel tapping tees. Performs welding activities to repair leaking natural gas mains and services.

Gathers measurement data for as-built drawings. Repairs damaged equipment; repairs and fabricates replacement and necessary parts for division equipment. Manages welding shop; maintains welding equipment, supplies, and materials. Performs small welding projects as assigned. Performs customer service and emergency response as needed; completes work orders; connects and disconnects gas service. May be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies and perform on-call duties.

Performs related tasks as required.

Thorough knowledge of methods used in welding, cutting, brazing and heating pipe and related fittings; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; thorough knowledge of plastic fusion; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; general knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the installation, replacement, maintenance and repair of natural gas lines; general knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in the installation, maintenance, repair, location and replacement of gas lines and appurtenances; general knowledge of city engineering standards and specifications related to gas system installation methods and materials; skill in arc welding; ability to supervise the work of others; ability to follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; thoroughness and dependability; ability to read utility maps to determine location of gas pipelines; ability to read and understand printed located ticket directions and perform tasks requested; ability to read operation and service manuals and to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, and the general public.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in arc welding of utility pipe lines.

Possession of or ability to obtain a Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina within six months of employment. Requires ability to pass American Petroleum Institute (API) 1104 welding qualification test. Possession of or ability to obtain CPR and basic first aid certification within one year of employment.
