Hourly Rate: $36.63 - $55.59

Responsibilities

Under general supervision, performs repairs and construction work on gas mains and services, maintains and operates domestic, commercial, and industrial gas appliances, equipment, and related piping or wiring.

Typical Duties:

1. Tapping, penetration, stopping, leak repairing, and clearing energized lines.
2. Purging and energizing gas mains, services, and system equipment.
3. Maintaining and repairing regulating, odorizing, filtering, and related equipment.
4. Inspecting main and service installations.
5. Fabricating and sketching piping tie-ins and gas service replacements in the field; adjusting sketches for field conditions.
6. Directing work of assistants and others in equipment operation, digging, and traffic control.
7. Cutting services on/off and handling gas/electric meters.
8. Performing duties of Equipment Driver/Operators at or below wage level.
9. Performing related or less skilled work as directed.

Note A: Not all duties are performed regularly by one fitter; qualification allows performing all tasks.

Note B: When directing a crew of at least two other fitters for four hours or more, the Fitter 1/C receives a substitution bonus (upgrading to Fully Qualified Chief Gas Fitter if for a week or more).

Skills and Requirements

1. Compliance with all terms of the Memorandum of Agreement governing training and progression.
2. High school diploma or equivalent recognized by New York State.
3. Thorough knowledge of company's gas practices and standards.
4. Familiarity with safety rules, resuscitation methods, and ability to perform First Aid.
5. Qualification for operator's licenses as legally required.

Physical Qualifications:

1. Good health, physique, and senses, confirmed by physical exam including color perception.
2. Strength and endurance for outdoor labor in all weather conditions.
