Job summary

Caterpillar Inc. is seeking a Gas Engine System Engineer to design, integrate, and support gas engine subsystems under senior guidance.

You will translate system requirements into detailed technical solutions and perform analysis, development, and validation to ensure subsystem performance within the engine system. The role involves designing advanced electrical control systems, prototyping mechatronic devices, and improving product robustness.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of analytical techniques and root-cause analysis to resolve problems.
  • Ability to perform systematic analysis and diagnose complex issues.
  • Understanding of embedded systems and CAN/J1939 communications.
  • Familiarity with requirements analysis and documentation practices.
  • Experience with diagnostic tools, data logging, and test equipment.

Job Description

A Gas Engine System Engineer develops, integrates, and supports gas engine subsystems under the guidance of a System Lead. They are responsible for translating system-level requirements into detailed technical solutions, executing analysis, development, and validation work to ensure the subsystem performs as intended within the overall engine system.

What You Will Do
  • Designing advanced electrical control systems and integrating electrical and mechanical systems
  • Designing and implementing software and procedures to control and enhance electro‑mechanical systems and mechatronic devices performance in collaboration with scientists.
  • Designing and prototyping mechatronic devices with motors, solenoids, gears, sensors, and springs
  • Identify and address areas of product weakness in finished products
Degree Requirement

Requires a degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems. Level Working Knowledge: Comfortable investigating unknown problems and situations through systematic analysis investigating multiple alternative solutions Uses engineering tools to make quantitative comparisons based off facts and empirical data Uses logic and intuition to make inferences about the meaning of the data and arrive at conclusions.

Problem Solving

Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations. Level Working Knowledge: Identifies and documents specific problems and resolution alternatives. Examines a specific problem and understands the perspective of each involved stakeholder. Develops alternative techniques for assessing accuracy and relevance of information. Helps to analyze risks and benefits of alternative approaches and obtain decision on resolution. Uses fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems.

Embedded Systems

Knowledge of embedded systems and their applications; ability to develop embedded systems with varying levels of complexity to control the operations of the machine it is embedded within. Level Working Knowledge: Understands both hardware and software aspects of electronic control systems. Thinks beyond individual components and focus on system interactions. Can trace issues across requirements, controls logic, communications, electronics, and mechanical subsystems. Understand CAN/J1939 communications, diagnostics, fault management, and embedded controls concepts. Effectively bridge discussions between software developers, electronics engineers, controls engineers, and product teams. Consider reliability, safety, maintainability, and customer impact when making technical decisions.

Requirements Analysis

Knowledge of tools, methods, and techniques of requirement analysis; ability to elicit, analyze and record required business functionality and non-functionality requirements to ensure the success of a system or software development project. Level Basic Understanding: Cites examples of functional and non‑functional requirements. Describes basic concepts and major activities associated with requirements analysis. Explains the life cycle context and scope of requirements analysis. Explains the structure and components of effective requirements analysis documents.

Technical Troubleshooting

Knowledge of technical troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, recognize, and resolve technical issues on hardware, software, application or operation. Level Basic Understanding: Follow a structured troubleshooting methodology rather than relying on assumptions. Rapidly narrow the problem space and focus investigations on the highest‑probability causes. Understand how to use diagnostic tools, oscilloscopes, CAN analyzers, datalogs, calibration tools, and test equipment. Separate observed symptoms from root causes. Develop and test hypotheses using evidence and data. Remain effective under pressure when supporting urgent field or production issues. Balance technical depth with timely business decisions.

Summary Pay Range

Pay Range: $97,530.00 - $146,290.00 Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
