Job summary

City of Fairhope is seeking an entry-level Gas Utility Worker to assist the Gas Crew Leader in repairing gas lines, installing services to homes and businesses, and performing trenching under supervision.

You will respond to emergencies, communicate with the public, and participate in safety trainings; a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver's license are required, with background checks and drug screening.

Job description

Description

Under the daily supervision of the Gas Crew Leader, this employee repairs gas lines, digs gas service line trenches and installs gas services to homes and businesses within the service area. This is an entry-level position in which the employee will work under the close direction of their Crew Leader and Construction Supervisor. The employee may be required to perform such tasks such as, but not limited to: Operating equipment utilized in gas line installation and repair, responding to emergency or hazardous situations, responding to information requests or general questions from the public. This job is considered safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings.

Essential Functions

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Line Repair
  • Repairs gas line leaks or other problems.
  • Ensures line repairs have been properly performed through work inspections.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Line Installation and maintenance
  • Installs residential and commercial gas services.
  • Ensures that line installations have been properly performed through work inspections.
  • Installs gas main distribution lines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Line Trenching
  • Uses ditching equipment to open service line or gas main trenches for installation of new gas lines.
  • Ensures new service or main trenches are properly dug and backfilled.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Emergency Response
  • Responds to gas system emergencies as part of a designated emergency response team.
  • Serves in a supporting and assisting role for emergency response team members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION: Public Relations
  • Responds to all public requests for information or assistance and refers these requests to the proper sources in a professional and courteous manner.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

Performs other job-related duties as required or assigned, including special events.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Possess a current driver license; must be insurable.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment background check and an initial drug screen.

  • Ability to operate a vehicle and respond when called upon in a timely manner.
Physical Demands

This work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent usage of hand digging equipment, working outdoors daily in the elements, climbing of tall ladders, lifting heavy objects over 50 lbs., crouching, or crawling in confined spaces.

Work Environment

The work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions such as working under extreme weather conditions, gaseous atmospheres, or situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
