Overview of Position

A special education classroom teacher performs under the general direction of the building principal or program manager and with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher fosters an effective learning environment, establishes and adapts learning objectives for special education students based on district guidelines and regulations, provides instruction, counseling, discipline, supervision, and evaluates student progress.

Essential Functions
  1. Fosters a conducive educational environment; plans and adapts instructional programs for individual student needs.
  2. Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials; attends professional development to stay current in special education techniques.
  3. Establishes classroom policies; provides guidance and discipline; makes referrals as needed.
  4. Communicates with students, parents, guardians, and staff to support student achievement.
  5. Sets classroom goals; evaluates and reports on student progress.
  6. Supervises non-certificated personnel; monitors student needs and behaviors.
  7. Develops, implements, and evaluates individual education plans (IEPs); maintains records and reports.
  8. Participates in staff meetings and professional activities.
Other Responsibilities
  • Serves on staff committees.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Performs related tasks as needed.
Reporting Relationships

Reports to the building Principal.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; experience with diverse student populations; valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with Special Education Endorsement. Additional certifications such as first aid, CPR, or driver's license may be required depending on the position.

Working Conditions
