The Gardener Level 1 is an entry-level position in the Gardens Operations department that will participate in a horticulture and landscape maintenance team within an assigned Garden area.

Experience in Horticulture/Landscaping is helpful. Must have a valid driver's license. Must complete WPS training within 5 days of hire or have a current GA commercial pesticide license.

Long hours may be required. Potentially hard physical labor, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects. Ability to stand, squat, and/or kneel for long periods of time. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather. Ability to operate small tools and lawn and gardening equipment. Ability to operate heavy equipment is preferred.

Be able to positively motivate and lead a team, conveying information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member.

Be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately. Work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests.

Identify potential guest issues and develop methodologies to prevent or limit the impact of those guest issues during the course of guest visits. Assimilate complex information and data from various sources and consider, adjust, or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need.

Effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns and issues raised by team members and guests. Work with and understand financial information and data and perform basic math functions.

Interact with all guests and team members in a friendly, service-oriented manner. Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Callaway Gardens' standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Gardens' business levels, including some holidays and weekends.

Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including wearing a nametag when working. Comply at all times with Callaway standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations. Maintain a friendly and warm demeanor at all times with both team members and guests.

Keep accurate records, including pesticide application logs. Report needs for materials and equipment to the direct supervisor. Keep assigned small tools clean and in good repair.

Maintain the horticultural standards of Callaway Gardens with a sense of urgency and focus with attention to detail in an efficient and productive manner. Practice proper horticultural techniques, including planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, deadheading, and plant identification.

Operate equipment properly and safely. Ensure equipment used is cleaned and properly maintained. Prioritize daily tasks and weekly projects with direction from the department supervisor. Work with volunteers as needed.

Ability to work with little or no supervision. Follow instructions, written or verbal. Attend all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.
