Tappan in Los Angeles seeks a detail-oriented Gallery Assistant who loves contemporary art. You will greet visitors, answer questions, and support the sales team to educate collectors about artworks.

This role partners with curators and installers, assists with exhibitions, and helps manage inventory and events. Prior gallery or luxury retail experience is preferred; ability to lift 50 lbs and work weekends may be required.

Position Overview

We are seeking a detail-oriented, personable, and art-passionate Gallery Assistant to join our team. This role is central to ensuring a warm and inviting gallery environment, supporting both our visitors and sales team. The ideal candidate has excellent communication skills, thrives in a collaborative environment, and enjoys engaging people in conversations about art.

The intention of this role is to grow into a full-time role.

Key Responsibilities

• Greet and engage visitors, providing a welcoming and informative gallery experience.
• Assist in showing artwork and answering visitor and collector questions.
• Build thoughtful curations based on collector or advisor specifications.
• Support the sales team in helping collectors learn about, discover, and acquire artworks.
• Coordinate with collectors for purchases, pickups, and deliveries.
• Help prepare and assist with exhibitions, openings, and special events.
• Maintain accurate gallery inventory and ensure artworks are properly displayed and cared for.
• Create an inviting and professional environment for experiencing contemporary art.
• Provide general administrative and operational support to the gallery team as needed.
• Provide QC for incoming artwork, such as reviewing colors and sizes.

Qualifications

• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs; occasional ladder work to pull art or during installs.
• Ability to stand for long periods
• Ability to work weekends and holidays, as well as occasional evening events.
• Ability to travel to off-site pop-ups (ranging from 2 - 6 weeks in length)
• Prior experience in a gallery, museum, or luxury retail setting preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to speak confidently about art.
• Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills.
• Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
• Proficiency in Google Workspace required; experience with Asana and Shopify a plus. Ability to work across multiple tech systems.
• A passion for contemporary art and supporting artists.
