Summary Description:
Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and collaborates with general education teachers. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.
Special Requirements:
Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day is mandatory, as per the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or specific service models must complete MCPS-provided courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEPs, learning theories, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, and relevant policies (ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004). Ability to support instruction, adapt programs and materials, and communicate effectively. Familiarity with the MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS) standards is required.
Education, Training, and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited institution. Fluency in learning theories, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching or two years of relevant teaching experience. Other applicable combinations of education, training, and experience may be considered.
Certificate and License:
Must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
