Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborating with general education teachers. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day is mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or specific service models must complete courses provided by MCPS, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis intervention, to support behavioral interventions.
Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited institution. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching or two years of relevant teaching experience. Alternative qualifications may be considered.
Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
