Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborating with general education teachers. Responsibilities include monitoring and evaluating student outcomes and assisting in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

Attendance at school meetings, programs, and activities outside instructional hours is mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or specific service models must complete designated MCPS courses, including behavioral management and nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.
Bachelor's degree in special education from an accredited institution. Fluency in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment is required. Student teaching in a related area or two years of relevant teaching experience are preferred. Other applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
Must meet Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
