Overview

Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. Monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities. Assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Responsibilities

• Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
• Collaborate with general education teachers.
• Monitor and evaluate outcomes for students with disabilities.
• Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
• Support behavioral interventions as required by identified programs and MCPS requirements.

Special Requirements

• Attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement.
• Complete specific MCPS courses designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities (behavioral management including nonviolent crisis interventions).
• Be prepared to support behavioral interventions in identified schools and programs.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
• Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in Special Education. Certification in a content area is desirable.
• Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
• Experience: student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years of teaching experience at the level appropriate to assignment.
• Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, IEP, ESSA, IDEA, TPGS standards, data collection, and best instructional practices.
