Under the direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities, collaborating with general education teachers. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes and assists in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Physical demands are as required by job duties. Teachers must attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside instructional hours as mandated by the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers in special education schools or specific service models must complete MCPS-provided courses in behavioral management, including nonviolent crisis interventions, to support behavioral interventions.
The salary range for this position is $62,558 to $127,334, based on education and experience. For benefits information, see this link.
Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, special education programs, IEPs, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, research-based reading instruction, assessments, and federal/state policies. Ability to support instruction, adapt materials, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with students, parents, and staff. Familiarity with MCPS Teacher Professional Growth System standards is required.
Bachelor’s degree in special education from an accredited institution, with knowledge of learning theory, behavioral management, and assessment. Student teaching or two years of relevant teaching experience preferred. Maryland State Department of Education certification for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education is required; certification in a content area is desirable.
