Job summary

Prince George County Public Schools is seeking a Special Education Paraprofessional to provide one-to-one support in general and special education environments, assisting with academic, behavioral, and personal care tasks.

The role requires assisting with IEP goals under supervision, aiding data collection, supervising meals and transitions, and helping students access classroom activities while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Qualifying ParaPro Assessment score of 455 or better.
• Experience working with students with disabilities.
• Effective oral, written, and visual communication.
• First Aid and CPR certification current.
• Familiarity with educational software or willingness to learn.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one instructional reinforcement under teacher direction.
• Assist with behavior and medical management plans as needed.
• Support data collection processes as required.
• Assist in students’ personal care needs, including toileting or clothing changes.
• Help students during meals and transitions, and supervise cafeteria or hall duties.
• Assist with assistive devices and equipment under professional supervision.
• Maintain confidentiality of student records and information.
• Implement daily health maintenance tasks as required.
• Model professional and ethical standards with students and staff.
• Participate in planning sessions and communicate with families as needed.

Job description

TITLE:

Special Education Paraprofessional

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Provide one-to-one personal care, academic and/or behavioral support for student(s) with disabilities served in general and/or special education environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• High school diploma or GED required
• Obtain a qualifying score of 455 or better on the ParaPro Assessment
• Proven experience working with students with disabilities
• Effective communication skills; oral, written, and visual with adults and children
• Understanding of basic principles of childhood development
• Familiarity with educational software or willingness to learn
• Current First Aid and CPR certification

REPORTS TO:

Principal and Special Education Teacher / Case Manager

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Provide instructional reinforcement under the direction of the classroom teacher in executing lesson plans and Individual Education Plans
• Assist with implementation of behavior management and/or medical management plans
• Assist in data collection processes, as needed
• Assist in handling students’ personal care needs (handle student toileting / change student clothes as needed)
• Support students in cafeteria lines and eating in cafeteria/classroom during breakfast and lunch, as needed
• Prep foods and physically assist or feed students during breakfast and lunch
• Provide guarded or direct assistance during transition changes from wheelchair to appropriate setting, i.e., changing table/mat or bean bag, stander, gait trainer
• Maintain confidentiality with regard to student records and information
• Directly implement or assist in fulfilling students' daily personal health maintenance tasks
• Serve bus, cafeteria, or hall duty
• Assist students with use of equipment such as standers, gait trainers, and personal communication devices, under the training and supervision of related service personnel such as OT, PT, VI specialists
• Serve as a positive, nurturing guide for students
• Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, staff, and community, following and upholding school rules and standards
• Supervise students in both instructional and non-academic activities across educational environments
• Participate in planning sessions with the learning team, communicating with parents and school officials as needed

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

• 180 days – 10 month contract
