The LACCD is comprised of nine colleges serving all or part of more than 40 cities in Southern California and spanning a service area of 882 square miles. DESCRIPTION OF POSITION

The West Los Angeles College (WLAC) Applied Technology Division seeks one creative faculty member with a demonstrated commitment to student success for a full-time limited position to start in the Fall 2025 semester . WLAC offers the only Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approved community college program in Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) in the city of Los Angeles. The successful candidates will exhibit a passion for teaching and will have an opportunity to contribute to a growing Aviation Maintenance program and to work collaboratively with the college's other departments to build an integrated program that offers multiple academic and/or professional pathways. This assignment is limited to two (2) semesters.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Capable of teaching all courses in the Aviation Maintenance Technician Program.

  • Note : The teaching schedule for the 2025-2026 academic year is Monday through Thursday from 4:45 p.m. to 10:25 p.m., plus 5 hours 35 minutes per week office hours. Future schedules may include evening or weekend hours as part of the assignment.

  • Provide the training required for AMT students in accordance with the FAA operating procedures and guidelines.

  • Provide the skills and knowledge required for competency in the field of aircraft maintenance, including use of reference materials, tools, equipment and technology.

  • Provide an in-depth knowledge of mechanic privileges, limitations, and responsibilities, including a working knowledge of the Federal Aviation Regulations.

  • Perform duties associated with instruction and academic support, including evaluating student performance, developing and assessing student learning outcomes, updating courses and curriculum, maintaining a posted schedule of office hours, and being available for student consultation by appointment.

  • Comply with additional instructional and operational guidelines as detailed in the WLAC Operations and Curriculum Manual, as approved by the FAA.

  • Maintain accurate records in accordance with the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the Los Angeles Community College District and the FAA.

  • Participate in shared governance related to academic and professional matters. These activities will occur both within the division as well as in the larger college setting.

  • Participate in program review and the development and revision of curriculum and student learning outcomes for the AMT program.

  • Engage in department, division, and college initiatives.

  • Participate in meetings and other activities sponsored by professional organizations, community partnerships, and advisory boards.

  • Participate in AMT pathway development through outreach with high schools, 4-year universities, and industry.

  • Participate in recruitment, outreach, and development of cooperative work experience opportunities for students.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment OR

    Any Associate degree AND six (6) years of professional experience directly related to the teaching assignment

    A demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.

    ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

    A medical certificate indicating fitness to instruct or associate with students is required at the applicant's expense after selection from an eligible list and prior to employment.

    Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

    License Qualifications

    A valid Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe & Powerplant Certificate

    (Instructors must meet the FAA eligibility requirements of FAR 147.23)

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree

  • Experience teaching in an AMT Program, particularly within the community college system.

  • Experience working in Avionics technology, and Airframe and/or Powerplant topics as listed in FAR Part 147 Appendix B, C, and D.

  • Familiarity with Aircraft and Maintenance Professional Originations and AMT skills competition guidelines.

  • Proficiency in computer use and willingness to use advanced technology to provide high-quality instruction, including online instruction and/or certification (Canvas preferred).

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Experience using student-centered and innovative pedagogies to teach and motivate students at all levels of college-readiness.

  • Ability to adapt varying pedagogical approaches to meet the needs of a diverse student population including, but not limited to, Latinas/os/x, African Americans, veterans, students with disabilities, student-parents, and foster youth.

  • Familiarity with and commitment to the mission and functions of a community college.

  • Demonstrated understanding of career pathways and transfer/workforce opportunities as they relate to the field.

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and a desire and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, students, and other members of a diverse campus community.

  • Experience with successful grant implementation, grant development, and grant management. Readiness to maintain continuous grant development.

    SALARY AND BENEFITS

    The starting salary range for the ten (10) month assignment is $74,500 to $138,430 commensurate with academic preparation and professional experience. The doctoral differential is $4,710 per academic year. District benefits include health, dental and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and term life insurance for the employee.
