Position Overview

This is a Federal Work Study Program (FWSP) Tutor position which provides in-person academic tutoring to students while maintaining an effective and positive learning environment.

Hours per Week

20-25 hours per week.

College/Department Overview

Upward Bound Central Prep is a federally funded TRIO program that assists students in completing high school and succeeding in college.

Department Specific Job Functions
  • Supervise, advise, and tutor approximately 30 high school students from disadvantaged and potential first-generation families for 6 weeks. Room and board are provided during specified times.
  • Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing recreational, social, cultural, and academic events and activities.
  • Transport participants to/from events and designated pick-up/drop-off locations.
  • Maintain discipline and positive relations in the residence hall.
  • Participate in all evening activities and field trips each Thursday.
  • Engage in scheduled in-service training sessions.
  • Provide tutoring in qualified areas to participants.
  • Supervise participants to ensure their safety and well-being.
  • Serve as a positive role model for participants.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters: Must be enrolled at least half-time (5 hours for graduates, 6 hours for undergraduates). International students must be enrolled full-time (9 hours for graduates, 12 hours for undergraduates).

Summer Semester: Must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours (regular positions) or 6 credit hours (FWSP positions for undergraduates) or 5 credit hours (for graduates). Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes to work during summer.

Enrollment Exception: Students nearing graduation with fewer credit hours required may submit a letter from their Academic Advisor indicating their graduation requirements to Human Resources.

FWSP Requirements

Must be awarded work study through the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. Summer FWSP is a separate application process. Contact jobs@uco.edu for more information.

Enrollment for FWSP requires a minimum of 6 credit hours for undergraduates and 5 for graduates each semester. Students in their final semester need a letter from their Academic Advisor if their remaining hours are fewer than the minimum.

Qualifications/Experience Required
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • At least 50 college credit hours completed.
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA.
  • Background similar to program participants.
  • Experience supervising adolescents from diverse backgrounds, preferably in residential settings.
  • Previous TRIO experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and professional skills.
