Job summary

Pacific University in Beaverton, OR, seeks an AVID Tutor to assist in middle/high school Tutorials during class time. The position is off campus at Beaverton School District sites and is restricted to current Pacific University students.

The Tutor will document student preparation and participation, facilitate problem-solving discussions, and assist in reviewing materials when plans shift between Tutorials and other activities. Hours align with regular school hours.

Qualifications

• Must have at least high school diploma with concurrent enrollment in college
• Three hours of paid training is mandatory prior to beginning the position and ongoing support provided throughout the year
• Experience with middle/high school students in an educational setting preferred
• Spanish language ability is preferred
• Strong teamwork and communication skills required

Responsibilities

• Assist the AVID classroom teacher with running Tutorials during class
• Record student preparedness, participation, and notes for students
• Prompt the flow of problem solving by asking guiding questions
• Review student materials as needed and assist in changing activities during the day

Location: Off Campus at a determined middle or high school within the Beaverton School District (Beaverton, OR)

Wage: $16.80/hr

Length of employment:2026-27 academic year

Purpose of Position: The AVID Tutor will be responsible for assisting the middle and/or high school AVID classroom teacher with the running of Tutorials during class. Tutorials is a problem solving group activity similar to college study groups, where students gather into small groups and work together on problems and difficulties they are encountering in their academic classes.

The AVID Tutor will work with one group of students, where the Tutor records how well prepared each student is, how often they participate in Tutorials, and relevant notes for students to keep. The AVID Tutor also will help prompt the flow of problem solving discussion by asking questions of the students when the conversation stops and progress towards resolving the academic difficulty has slowed down.
Occasionally, the AVID Tutor may be asked by the AVID classroom teacher to review students' materials (such as planners, binders, and other school-related materials) for their level of organization and/or to assist in other areas of the classroom if the plan for the day changes from Tutorials to another activity.

Qualifications

Required:

• A minimum of high school diploma with concurrent enrollment in a college
• Three hours of paid trai ning is mandatory prior to beginning the position and ongoing support is provided throughout the year.
• Has previous experience working with middle and/or high school aged students in an educational setting
• is a speaker of more than one language (Spanish is preferred)
• has strengths in teamwork, communicating with others, managing time, and adapts well to changing needs.
