Helion is seeking a Plasma Diagnostics Intern to design, test, and deploy optical diagnostics for fusion research in Everett, WA. You will work on non-invasive probes to understand core plasma parameters and help fine-tune machine operation for fusion.

Requirements include pursuing a PhD in Physics or Aerospace Engineering with plasmas experience, a GPA of 3.0+, and the ability to join onsite for a 12-week period in summer 2027, with full-time availability through May 2028.

Qualifications

  • Full-time onsite for 12 weeks during summer 2027.
  • Currently pursuing a PhD in Physics, Aerospace Engineering, or related field, with plasmas experience.
  • Must complete PhD and commence full-time employment by May 2028.
  • GPA 3.0 or above.
  • Benchtop optical test and measurement knowledge.
  • Optical fiber alignment proficiency.
  • Basic laser safety and lab experience.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB or Python for analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Prototype and bench test optical diagnostics, e.g., polarimetry or interferometer components.
  • Understand operations and bench test potential upgrades to performance.
  • Collaborate to deploy optical diagnostic components and systems to study plasma parameters.
