Job description

Thank you for your interest in joining the African Gifted Foundation (AGF) Board of Directors. This document outlines the roles, responsibilities, and expectations for each position on the AGF Board. AGF is dedicated to empowering talented African youth, particularly in STEM and education, and board members play a critical role in advancing this mission.

General Information for All Board Roles

Time Commitment: Board members are expected to participate in five board meetings per year, in addition to committee meetings as applicable. Meetings will be conducted virtually or in person as needed (primarily virtual).

Term of Service: Each board member serves for 2 terms of three years, with the option to renew for a third term. At the end of each term, board members will undergo a review process to assess continuation.

Fundraising Chairperson Role Overview

The Fundraising Chair will lead the development and execution of AGF’s US Board fundraising strategy, ensuring the board meets its annual financial targets. This individual will focus on working with other board members on cultivating relationships with donors, identifying new revenue opportunities, and creating innovative strategies to secure funding from corporations, foundations, and high-net-worth individuals.

Key Responsibilities

Lead / facilitate efforts in collaboration with the US Board Members to:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy within the first 3 months.
  • Secure commitments from 3–5 corporate sponsors or foundation donors within the first year.
  • Drive the success of fundraising events, including a flagship gala or virtual events.
  • Cultivate relationships with 10+ prospective major donors.
  • Work closely with the board and staff to identify new revenue streams.
Specific Outcomes Expected
  • Achievement of $500,000 fundraising target in Year 1.
  • Number of new donor relationships established.
  • Execution of 2–3 major donor campaigns/events.
  • Creation of fundraising reports for board meetings.

  • Proven success in nonprofit fundraising, especially with corporations and foundations.
  • Strong network within philanthropy and corporate giving sectors.
  • Excellent negotiation, networking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to implement actionable plans.
  • Familiarity with donor management tools and fundraising platforms.
Additional Information

Expected Start Date: Board members will be expected to begin their term in April 2025. Prior to the official start date, new members will participate in an orientation session to familiarize themselves with the African Gifted Foundation’s mission, governance structure, and key priorities.

Onboarding Process: The onboarding process will include the following steps:

Welcome Packet: New board members will receive a comprehensive welcome packet, including:

  • AGF’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Strategic priorities and key organizational initiatives.
  • Financial overview and fundraising targets.
  • Governance policies, bylaws, and board expectations.

Orientation Session: A virtual session to:

  • Introduce board members to AGF’s leadership team and fellow board members.
  • Review roles, responsibilities, and expectations.
  • Discuss the organization’s history, impact, and future goals.

Committee Assignment: Board members will be assigned to at least one committee based on their expertise and interests (e.g., fundraising, finance, communications, or STEM partnerships).

Mentorship (Optional): New members may be paired with an experienced board member who can provide guidance and answer questions during the first few months.

Time Commitment:

Board Meetings: 5 meetings per year (held virtually), lasting approximately 2 hours each.

Committee Meetings: Frequency will depend on the committee but is typically quarterly or as needed.

Fundraising & Events: Participation in at least one fundraising event annually and contribution to donor cultivation efforts.

Other Commitments: Time required for reviewing materials, networking, and advocating for AGF within your personal and professional networks.

Financial Contributions: Contributions could include direct donations, securing sponsorships, or facilitating introductions to potential donors.
