Job summary

System Safety is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer in Newark, NJ to lead machine risk management efforts across manufacturing processes. You will work with internal and external clients to ensure safe and efficient operations, with up to 15% travel annually.

The role requires driving risk reduction, safeguarding, and compliance with applicable standards, including installation of safety controls and engineering documents.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Technology, or related technical field.
• CMSE, TÜV, or equivalent certification preferred, but not required; employer will support credentialing within 6 months.

Our client is seeking a Functional Safety Engineer to lead machine risk management efforts. This role works cross-functionally with internal and external clients to support safe and efficient manufacturing processes.

Up to 15% travel per year

Responsibilities:

• Lead and enhance the site's machine safety program, ensuring compliance with regulatory and company standards.
• Conduct machine risk assessments and implement effective safeguarding and risk-reduction solutions.
• Manage machine safety, automation, and equipment improvement projects from design review through commissioning and validation.
• Monitor program performance through audits, metrics, corrective actions, and documentation management.
• Serve as the site's technical expert for machine safety, risk mitigation, and safety control systems.
• Review and approve risk assessments, safety-related engineering documents, and control system designs.
• Support incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action implementation.
• Identify opportunities to improve safety, equipment reliability, productivity, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Automation, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Technology, or a related technical field.
• CMSE, TÜV, or equivalent Machinery/Functional Safety certification is preferred, but not required. The company is prepared to pay for credentialing, but candidate must be open to completing credentialing within 6 months of employment.
• 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, automation, machine safety, or industrial engineering.
• Experience leading machine risk assessments, mitigation programs, and capital improvement projects.
• Strong knowledge of machine safeguarding, industrial controls, and applicable safety regulations and standards (ANSI, ISO, IEC, NFPA, and robotics).
• Proficiency with LOTO, safety PLCs, Performance Level (PL), Safety Integrity Level (SIL), and machine safety validation methods.
• Experience with SISTEMA software for functional safety analysis and performance level calculations
