Seeking a Functional Safety Engineer with 5+ years of experience in functional safety engineering within industrial or automation environments. The ideal candidate will have strong Safety PLC and electrical schematic experience, functional safety certification, and expertise in applicable safety standards.
Duration: 12 months with possibility of extension
Location: Liberty, NC
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM-5:00 PM EST, with availability for weekends, off-shifts, holidays, and scheduled shutdowns as required.
Responsibilities
- Develop detailed project plans, schedules, milestones, deliverables, and KPIs.
- Audit Safety Control Systems (SCS) for compliance with ISO 13849-1, ANSI B11, and other applicable standards.
- Review Safety PLC logic and electrical schematics and identify non-conformities.
- Design, modify, and verify countermeasures to achieve required control categories and performance levels.
- Perform spot audits of SCS designs and modifications to ensure compliance with intended designs.
- Predominantly support the redesign and implementation of Safety PLC logic and safety circuitry.
- Manage and monitor third-party consultants based on milestones, concerns, and KPIs.
- Provide technical oversight of third-party validation activities.
- Lead cross-functional communication and collaboration to resolve technical issues.
- Provide written and verbal project status updates to management and stakeholders.
- Perform hands-on troubleshooting and implementation as needed.
- Support the Control Reliability team through technical mentoring and coaching.
- Contribute to a positive, team-oriented, cross-functional work environment.
Qualifications
Required
- 5+ years of functional safety engineering experience, ideally 7-10+ years.
- Technical Associate's degree or higher in a related discipline.
- Functional Safety Engineer (FSE) certification, such as TÜV or equivalent.
- Certification credentials must be included with the resume.
- In-depth knowledge of ISO 13849-1, ANSI B11, and relevant safety standards.
- Strong Safety PLC programming experience, including reading, interpreting, modifying, and configuring safety logic.
- Experience with PLC/SPLC communication protocols and system integration.
- Strong technical problem-solving and countermeasure implementation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work during scheduled shutdowns and support weekends, off-shifts, and holidays as required.
- Ability to navigate large industrial facilities, including standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, and kneeling.
- Ability to safely lift, push, or pull up to 25 pounds.

- Experience with risk assessment tools.
