Job description

Functional Containment and Radionuclide Transport Engineer

System One is seeking a Functional Containment and Radionuclide Transport Engineer for a remote, long-term contract opportunity based out of Bellevue, WA.

The engineer will perform radionuclide transport calculations within systems and buildings to support effluent releases and develop mechanistic source terms for postulated accidents (Level-2 PRA). They will collaborate with nuclear safety and licensing staff to meet technical and regulatory safety requirements. Responsibilities include developing computational methodologies, contributing to software dedication, hazard analysis, PIRT exercises, SSC classification, analytical methods, and analysis of containment and radionuclide transport, including verification and validation activities.

Responsibilities

• Develop analytical models for radiological source terms during normal operation and anticipated operational occurrences.
• Model ex-core radionuclide sources such as radwaste systems, spent fuel, and auxiliary systems.
• Support the development of accident source term methods for postulated accidents.
• Create models for containment performance, including mass and energy release and leak rates.
• Provide inputs to radiological consequence models.
• Support regulatory submittals and NRC interactions.
• Establish containment strategies to meet risk-informed performance-based effluent and release limits.
• Work with interdisciplinary teams to define requirements for SSC supporting radionuclide containment.
• Document model development and analysis results.
• Review analyses and engineering design media.
• Support radiological protection solutions and dose assessments as needed.

Key Qualifications and Skills

• Experience with containment analysis and radionuclide transport codes (GOTHIC, RADTRAD, MELCOR, SRT or similar).
• Knowledge of functional containment approach is a plus.
• Understanding of nuclear design, regulatory requirements, and risk-informed performance-based guidance for Non-Light Water Reactors.
• Familiarity with PRA principles and ASME/ANS standards is advantageous.
• Experience with SFR safety analysis preferred; other reactor design experience considered.
• Strong analytical, modeling, and reporting skills.
• Knowledge of NQA-1 requirements and quality assurance practices.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams.
• Software engineering skills are a plus.
• High integrity, good communication, teamwork orientation.
