Job description

Job Title: School Nurse

Hours: 37.5 per week, non-exempt

Union Affiliation: Homecare & School Healthcare Workers of Berlin

Starting Salary: School Nurse - $38.05/hour (effective 7/1/25)

Function: Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, provides skilled nursing in the school and home setting according to the standing orders of the agency and specific orders of physicians. The School Nurse provides nursing services utilizing a comprehensive base of nursing theory and nursing process and communicates and documents observations and assessments. The School Nurse is responsible for giving first aid in the schools, in addition to performing screening tests such as vision, hearing, height, weight, pulse, and blood pressure on appropriate groups of children. Other functions include visits to homes to follow the course of children with chronic illness. School Nurses also act as Visiting Nurses in the Town as necessary.

Typical Duties, Responsibilities, Tasks & Assignments:

  • Works in conjunction with school personnel in the development of a plan of care that ensures a student will gain maximum benefit from his/her educational experience, while ensuring student needs are met.
  • Participates in the Town’s community health programs.
  • Practices Universal Precautions and follows the techniques taught concerning the prevention and management of exposure to potentially harmful body fluids or other hazardous materials.
  • Evaluates the medical aspects of children with learning behavior problems. Evaluates medical history, socioeconomic status, physical conditions, and the relationship of all of these factors to the child’s learning style and behavioral pattern.
  • Conducts special physical screening programs, such as complete physical examinations on school entry and scoliosis screening in early adolescence.
  • Provides vision and hearing screening.
  • Serves as liaison between educational and medical personnel, especially with regard to special education placement and development of the individual educational plan.
  • Supervises Health Aids and volunteers within the Nurses Office.
  • Works with occupational and physical therapists in the care of disabled children.
  • Works with school Social Workers in assisting children and families to deal with difficult life situations.
  • Participates in orientation, teaching and supervision of other nursing and ancillary student care.
  • Participates in the Berlin VNA care of the sick program by rotating weekends/holidays with the home care nursing staff and providing some summer vacation coverage.
  • Enters all pertinent information and documentation into the SNAP Software System.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands: Requires the ability to sit/stand/pivot, twist and change position frequently. Requires the ability to occasionally lift, push, pull and carry 20 to 50 lbs. Requires the ability to utilize a telephone, laptop computer and clinical equipment. May require the ability to travel to/from the Agency, client homes and other professional appointments.

Qualifications: Graduate of a National League for Nursing approved school of nursing with a minimum of two current years of registered nursing experience within five (5) years immediately prior to employment as a school nurse plus R.N. licensure by the State of Connecticut. Must be able to perform manual tasks, walk up and down stairs, drive a car and have hearing and eyesight that permits conversation and performance of the duties of a registered nurse who may have to go quickly to a site to render first aid. Must be able to communicate both verbally and in writing with students, physicians, school health aides and other school personnel. Must be free from addictive habits. Must be a team player.
