We're seeking passionate and driven Full-stack Software Engineers to join our growing collective. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of our product offerings and directly contribute to impactful social good initiatives. You'll thrive in an environment that values autonomy, collaboration, and a shared commitment to making a difference. As an early member of our team, you'll have significant influence and the potential to grow into a Director of Engineering role.
As Making Biscuits Collective is bootstrapped, interested parties must be comfortable with a commission-based compensation structure to start, as we continue to build out our company strategy and client base. Collective Members tend to have full-time jobs in addition to their role at the collective as we do not expect a full-time commitment from collective members. Collective members working on a project split client compensation accordingly.

About Making Biscuits Collective
Making Biscuits Collective is an activist-led digital services collective
We exist so non-profits, mission-driven organizations, and social-impact businesses can put their mission first. Making Biscuits Co is a group of talented product managers, engineers, designers, and analysts looking to share their talents to make an impact on the world. We offer sliding-scale solutions for all our clients, removing the barrier to accessing high quality tech solutions.
Our collective has a communal approach to work, and we function similarly to a co-op: we split profits and proceeds evenly amongst ourselves. This allows us to center our mission and as well as center our client experience, crafting professional and intuitive user experiences and products to create a lasting impact.
What You'll Do
- Own the end-to-end development of web applications for client projects, from ideation and architectural design to deployment and iteration.
- Collaborate closely with clients to understand their mission, challenges, and user needs, translating them into robust and scalable technical solutions.
- Work independently to drive development, making informed decisions and proactively addressing technical challenges across the stack.
- Implement user interfaces according to design specs, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.
- Design and develop server-side logic and APIs, working with various back-end technologies and database systems (e.g., relational databases).
- Adapt to and work with a variety of technologies, including but not limited to React.js, static WordPress sites, and diverse database solutions.
- Partner with our talented product managers, designers, and analysts to ensure seamless execution and delivery of high-quality products.
- Help flesh out and refine our hiring process for future Software Engineers, contributing to the growth and development of our engineering team.
- Champion best practices in code quality, testing, and deployment, ensuring maintainable and performant applications.
What We're Looking For
- Passion for social impact and mission-driven work, aligning with the values of Making Biscuits Collective. Our values are authenticity, equity, innovation, compassion, diversity, and community.
- A killer intersection of empathy and logic.
- Experience as a Full-stack Software Engineer with a strong track record of building and deploying digital products.
- You thrive working independently , demonstrating strong initiative, problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach.
- A strategic thinker who can understand high-level technical requirements and translate them into actionable development plans.
- Adaptability and eagerness to learn new technologies, with experience across different parts of the web stack (front-end, back-end, databases). You don't need to be an expert in everything, and it's likely you have a preferred part of the stack - but you should be comfortable with a 'jack of all trades' approach.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with clients and internal teams.
- Experience in helping to build out team processes or hiring initiatives is a plus.
What We're NOT Looking For
- You're looking to make a lot of money very quickly. As an early-stage collective with a communal profit-sharing model, our financial growth is tied to our collective success and client acquisition.
- You need a very structured and rigidly defined work environment. We're still fleshing out many processes, and you'll need to be comfortable with ambiguity and helping to build structure.
- You want a very clear and strict separation between work and personal life. As an activist-run collective, our mission can be deeply integrated into our values. This doesn't mean we're looking for folks to work long hours or not have a work-life balance: that's important to us! But we're also looking for folks who are interested in making human connections.
- You don't like taking risks or prefer established paths. We're a startup, and joining us means embracing uncertainty and actively participating in shaping our future.
Ready to make an impact? Even if you don't check all the boxes, we'd love to hear from you. We're excited to learn more about you!
