Job summary

Children’s Home Society of South Dakota seeks a Youth Care Provider to deliver crisis and non-crisis intervention services for children in the shelter, under trauma-informed care principles.

You will perform shelter tasks, supervise activities, assist with medications as needed, and help maintain safety and documentation. Strong communication and teamwork are essential in this role.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • 1 year of childcare experience required (personal or professional).
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, education, or human services preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Care for children with supervision, assist with hygiene, diet, dressing and bathing.
  • Support with routine appointments and transport as needed; may assist with medications.
  • Complete behavior reports and documentation; use approved behavior management techniques.
  • Facilitate structured programs and activities for children in shelter; support training of staff and volunteers.
  • Back up crisis line, shelter intakes, and departures as needed.

$20.00/hr + up to $2/hr shift differential

Schedule:

Week 1: Monday: 1pm to 11pm, Thursday: 7am-5pm, Friday: 1pm to 11pm, Saturday: 1pm to 11pm

Week 2: Sunday: 1pm to 11pm, Tuesday: 12pm to 10pm, Wednesday: 1pm to 11pm, Thursday: 1pm to 11pm

Position Overview:

Children’s Home Society of South Dakota is seeking a Youth Care Provider to provide crisis and non-crisis intervention services for the children in the shelter and perform other various shelter tasks. What You Will Do:

  • Care of Children: Maintain vigilant child supervision. Assist children with hygiene, diet, dressing and bathing. Assist with supervised visitations. Assist with routine appointments for children and transport as necessary. May assist in administration of medications to children. Complete child departure requirements.
  • Child Behavior: Complete behavioral, CPS reports and all necessary documentation by the end of each shift. Utilize approved behavior management techniques to respond to behaviors.
  • Safety, Policies and Procedures: Ensure safety standards and infection control policies are followed.
  • Program Management: Facilitate structured programs, i.e., games, outdoor recreation, etc. Assist with daily, monthly and special event activities for children in shelter. Assist with training needs of staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Shelter Activities: May coordinate and facilitate shelter and non-shelter programs as assigned. Assist in keeping the shelter clean and orderly. Serve as back up for crisis telephone calls, drop-in counseling sessions, shelter intakes and departures.
  • Professional Development: Complete required annual training. Maintain required certifications and proficiencies. Attend assigned meetings.

Requirements

  • Education: High School Diploma/GED Required. Bachelor’s degree in social work, Education, or Human Service Field preferred.
  • Experience: 1 year of childcare experience required; personal or professional.
  • Licensure: Valid Driver’s License preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Environment focused on care of individuals in crisis situations. The employee is regularly required to bend and sit on the floor. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to physically restrain a child in ways taught by the Agency while being able to verbally communicate to the child and other staff.
