Job summary

Asheville City Schools is seeking an Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired to facilitate communication in classrooms district-wide. The role uses sign language to convey teacher instruction and supports deaf or hard-of-hearing students in both academic and daily activities.

You will interpret, transliterate, and collaborate with teachers to plan instruction, ensuring inclusive access to the curriculum and a positive learning environment for students.

Qualifications

• ASL and Signed English knowledge as part of qualifications.
• Familiarity with IEPs and behavior support plans.
• Ability to translate for deaf or hard-of-hearing students in classrooms.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate communication between deaf/HoH students and others using sign language.
• Assist students in daily activities and classroom instruction.
• Provide voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice transliteration support.
• Interpret or transliterate language necessary for education.
• Monitor students to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
• Participate in meetings and prepare materials for lectures and activities.
