Full Time School Nurse - Floating Position

The Town of Agawam is accepting applications for 1 (one) full time School Nurse, Floating Position. The salary range for this position is $52,530.00 - $68,289.00. Primary Responsibility

Will provide professional public health nursing services as they apply to the school population; does related work as required. The services are performed in the public school system under the direction of the Lead Nurse/Supervisor. The primary function of the position is to enforce state mandated health laws related to the Early Childhood Program, and to strengthen the educational process through improvement of the health status of the student population.

Essential Functions

The profession of school nursing is a dynamic discipline embracing a variety of functions. Prevention and promotion of wellness are the primary responsibilities of the school nurse. Because of his/her medical knowledge, academic preparation, and professional skills, the school nurse is the only member of the faculty qualified to:

Functions specific to FTSSN-Float

  • Generate a school health record for all incoming ECC students that includes, i.e.: State Mandated Immunizations, school health physical, health profile, and emergency contacts.
  • Initiate & update pertinent medical history into SNAP program.
  • Notify bus drivers of Life threatening Allergies and severe medical conditions.
  • Communicate and prepare confidential medical lists for staff and school nurses.
  • Initiate paperwork and phone calls to obtain medications needed at school.
  • Prepare initial IHCP, Allergy Action Plans, Asthma, Diabetic, Seizure, etc. as necessary.
  • Attend 504 and IEP meetings as requested.
  • Attend student and parent orientations as needed.
  • Coordinate State Mandated screenings.

Additional Functions

  • Provide care for illness or injury occurring in school for all students.
  • Perform tests for vision, hearing and scoliosis.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date health records for each student.
  • Assess and evaluate health and developmental status of pupil in order to make a nursing diagnosis and to establish priority for action.
  • Interpret health and developmental status of pupil for parents, school personnel and for pupil.
  • Counsel pupil, parent and school personnel and plan action for eliminating, minimizing or accepting health problems that interfere with effective learning by pupil.
  • Assist persons responsible for pupil’s health to find and use appropriate resource material.
  • Recommend modifications in the educational program to administrator when health or developmental status of pupil indicates need for such action.
  • Serve as health consultant and resource person in health instruction curriculum planning by providing current scientific information from related fields.
  • Use direct health services as vehicle for health counseling.
  • Serve as liaison between parent, school and community in health matters.
  • Serve as a member of placement committee for special educational programs.

Required Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • Must be available to substitute at any given school in an emergency situation. Nurse will be required to work the seven hours shift worked by the absent nurse.
  • Good knowledge of the methods and techniques of general nursing care and their relation to medical and surgical practice of materia medica, dietetics, sanitation and personal hygiene.
  • Good knowledge of methods and techniques used in the prevention of communicable diseases.
  • Good knowledge of the principles and practices of public health nursing and applicable public health laws.
  • Some knowledge of the scope and aspects of the student health education program.
  • Some knowledge of the functions of other health and social agencies and their relationship to the student health program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, and teachers.
  • Ability to understand and carry out detailed instructions of a technical or professional nature.
  • Ability to interpret and explain health laws and regulations.
  • Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Good physical condition.

Required Education and Experience

  • Experience in pediatric nursing.
  • Completion of an accredited course of training for nurses, including or supplemented by courses in public health nursing or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions.
  • Possession of and maintaining a license as a Registered Nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Possession of and maintaining up-to-date CPR certification.
