Goodwill of Central Iowa is seeking a Retail Key Holder/Shift Leader in West Des Moines to lead daily store operations, train staff, and deliver exceptional customer service. You will act as on-duty supervisor, drive sales, and support donor interactions while upholding safety and merchandising standards.

The role requires a high school diploma (or equivalent), strong communication, and the ability to lead a retail team across variable shifts, including weekends. Competitive benefits apply.

Are you a motivated individual who enjoys working with retail teams, leading by example, and delivering exceptional customer service? As a Key Holder, you will play an important role in supporting daily store operations, training team members, and creating a positive shopping experience for customers and donors. This position serves as a shift leader on duty, helping ensure operational excellence while advancing our mission through service, teamwork, and community impact.

What You'll Do

Support Daily Store Operations

• Assist in directing, coordinating, and monitoring daily retail store operations.
• Help achieve store sales, production, and revenue goals.
• Serve as a leader on duty and provide direction to team members during assigned shifts.
• Make independent decisions to support adequate business coverage and operational needs.
• Record bank deposits and ensure proper cash handling procedures.
• Operate point-of-sale (POS) systems accurately and efficiently.

Train and Coach Team Members

• Support onboarding and training of new employees.
• Utilize learning management systems (LMS), mentoring, and job-shadowing techniques.
• Reinforce company policies, procedures, and customer service standards.
• Partner with store leadership to identify employee learning opportunities and support development.
• Provide coaching, feedback, and encouragement to help team members succeed.
• Create a welcoming and engaging experience for customers and donors.
• Communicate with kindness, respect, and professionalism.
• Resolve customer concerns in a timely and positive manner.
• Build strong relationships that encourage repeat shoppers and donors.

Utilize Technology and Reporting Tools

• Use Microsoft Office computer applications, barcoding, & POS software to track, report, and communicate store data.
• Monitor key performance indicators and operational goals.
• Support accurate recordkeeping and reporting processes.

Assure Store Safety & Visual Standards

• Open and close the store according to established policies and procedures.
• Conduct routine walkthroughs to ensure safety, cleanliness, and organization standards are maintained.
• Submit maintenance requests and report safety concerns promptly.
• Help maintain merchandise presentation, pricing accuracy, and store appearance.

What We're Looking For

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous retail, customer service, or leadership experience.
• Experience handling cash and operating POS & barcoding systems.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams).

Required Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent or currently attending high school or GED classes. A minimum of 2 years of any combination of military service, high school or related paid employment.
• Must be age 18 or older.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• Ability to lead, coach, and motivate others.
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
• Availability to work across any open shift to support business needs including days, evenings, and weekends.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to be stationary or mobile for extended periods of time.
• Ability to carry, lift, push, or pull up to 40 pounds regularly.
• Ability to tolerate variations in work environment temperature.

Compensation & Benefits

Pay

• Starting wage: $16.00 per hour.
• Earn an additional $1.00 per hour for all Saturday and Sunday shifts worked.
• Monthly bonus eligibility based on achievement of department goals.
• Eligibility for annual merit increases based on individual job performance.

Benefits are available on the first day of the month following 60 days of employment, subject to eligibility requirements.
