Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health in Massachusetts is seeking a Staff Perfusionist to support a busy cardiac surgery program. This is a 40 hour day shift position with on-call responsibilities and a seven-person perfusion team handling complex cases including ECMO and renovated operating rooms.

The role emphasizes pre-bypass planning, intraoperative management, patient safety, and collaboration with physicians, ECMO teams, and OR staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred.
  • Graduate of an accredited perfusion program.
  • Certified or eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion; MA licensure or licensure eligible.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure adequate coverage for all cardiac surgical and cell-saving procedures.
  • Handle call and additional services outside normal hours.
  • Complete pre-bypass checklist and ensure resources are ready for surgery.
  • Review patient charts to anticipate perioperative problems.
  • Initiate and terminate extracorporeal circulation as directed by the surgeon.
  • Operate intra-operative blood salvage equipment and manage ECMO-related tasks.
  • Provide POC testing per CLIA and CAP guidelines.
  • Maintain professional interactions with colleagues and patients.

Job Description

Staff Perfusionist is responsible for the safety and treatment of patients needing extracorporeal circulation. Duties include but are not limited to: Working as clinical perfusionist, Intraoperative Blood Salvage, Implementing ECMO, and completing satisfactory performance appraisals and competency assessments, clinical education and completing departmental projects in a timely manner.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Including But Not Limited To
  • Under the direct supervision of department leadership actively ensures adequate coverage for all cardiac surgical and cell saving procedures
  • Call and additional services outside normal working hours
  • Complete the Pre-bypass checklist prior to cardiopulmonary bypass to ensure that the appropriate resources are available and in satisfactory condition for the surgery.
  • Review the patient’s chart prior to surgery to better anticipate peri-operative and post-operative problems.
  • At the discretion of the surgeon initiates and terminates extracorporeal circulation.
During Bypass Surgery
  • Employs safety devices, such as an air bubble detector, low level alarms.
  • Maintains an appropriate blood flow according to protocol.
  • Administers cardioplegia solutions as prescribed by surgeon.
  • Maintains appropriate blood pressure.
  • Monitors operating volume in extracorporeal circuits and keeps at a safe level.
  • Administers medication, blood products, anesthetic agents, or intravenous solutions.
  • Maintains an appropriate gas exchange according to established protocol.
  • Regulates the patient’s body temperature as prescribed by the surgeon.
  • Monitors and maintains proper anticoagulation status of the patient according to established protocol.
  • Operates the Intra-Operative Blood Salvage equipment.
  • Calculate projected flow rates, medication doses, and assess the need for blood replacement in accordance with each patient’s physical condition and hospital protocol.
  • Assists with implantation for ECMO
  • Provides POC testing as appropriate and complies with all CLIA and CAP guidelines.
  • Expected to develop strong collaborative relationships with physicians, AP staff, ECMO teams and healthcare Professionals.
  • Assist in the development of a culture that drives quality, patient safety, intra-department teambuilding, interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Maintains courteous and effective interactions with colleagues and patients.
  • Provides support to actively working staff
  • Maintains the expected level of professionalism in the department, hospital and healthcare system
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree required; master's degree preferred. Graduate of an accredited perfusion program

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Certified, or certification eligible by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. Licensed, or licensure eligible in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Strong interpersonal skills. Strong analytical skills to participate, identify and solve perfusion related problems. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, physicians, management and operating room personnel. Ability to make independent judgements to resolve complex problems

Experience: New graduates are eligible if they meet the licensure and certification requirements.

Pay Range

$180,003.00 USD - $243,006.00 USD

The pay range listed for this position is the annual base salary range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law.
